Reed stuck or timing

This could turn into a long story, here's the short side.I have a 82 inline 6 mercury, the carbs were rebuilt at a dealership, and the motor would idle but not run under pressure , the stator was tested and replaced. During a tank test a carb started flooding, the "shop" took off the stator and said they wouldnt work on it anymore, and removed the new stator and said that my gas tank was dirty.

I cleaned out the tank, it did have stuff....floating in it, then put on a inline fuel filter.

I cleaned out the carb, and I thought it was still flooding, but with the gas line still attached, I pulled the carb lose from the intake and pumped the bulb, gas leaks out from the intake.

I have decent knowledge of auto engines, but not marine, this sounds like a stuck or broken reed valve to me, but if they left the timing off, could this cause the gas leak.

From reading here, you make it sound like the reeds are just under the intake, my repair book shows reeds on the crank shaft, so where are they, and can the average guy fix them.

Do you think the problem is the reed valve, am betting dirt was fouled one out.

OOPS......The motor will run at a low speed, and placing my hand over the "flooding carb" dos not change the the motor very much if at all.

Hank, it is very unlikely the reed valves are bad. They are stainless steel and very strong and durable. Alternatively, carbs flood all the time due to worn out inlet needles and floats that crack or disolve. Alos, the fuel pump has a diaghram which lets rew fuel into the crankcase, if it develops a hole. Your tale is hard to follow, but if fuel pours out of the crankcase, it is time to rebuild the fuel pump. it is a simple matter.

BTW - The reeds are inside the crankcase. You need to pull the powerhead and remove starter, carbs and crankshaft to get to them.

Thanks Chris1956

I didnt think about the fuel pump, Ill give it a look, it would definitely be an easier fix too.

Sorry my problem was hard to follow, to be short,I have the 3 carbs installed, but I removed the nuts on the bottom carb , and have it pulled away from the intake about 1 inch, all of the gas lines are connected. If I pump the bulb gas leaks out of the bottom intake hole.

The gas is coming from the crankcase , not a flooded carb.

I rebuilt the fuel pump, (i think the old one was fine) and I still have fuel coming out of the lowest intake hole when I pump the bulb up.

my next question...should you be able to blow air through the Idle Enrichment Valve

I think my top carb is flowing back through the valve and into the crank case, through what I would call the fuel rail.

I had the wife push in the key to give it chock ,while I stood by the Enrichment Valve and the valve doesnt make a noise, and I can blow air through it chocked and unchocked, I thought the valve should "click"

Hank, I am not too familar with the enrichener on that motor. Most pump raw fuel into the crankcase for cold starting. You might disable it and see if the problem gets better.

The Fuel pump diaghram seperates the crancase from the gas liine. If it leaks, crancase will fill with raw fuel as well.

I think you are on the correct track.

Re: Reed stuck or timing

The later model in-lines did not have choke plates on the carbs and used a fuel solenoid to open and allow fuel to flow into each intake, thus enrichening the mixture.

This valve should NOT allow fuel to pass until 12 v is applied. If you are able to 'blow' thru it then it is bad and must be replaced.

the enrichment valve is bad, you can turn the adjustment screw down and the fuel stops leaking from the crank case.

When you let the valve operate on its own, it only shuts off the fuel about one time out of eight tries.

Now my problem is finding a valve, seems like they are no longer available from Mercury, I searched the IBoats parts section, I thought maybe I could use an evenrude valve, but it seems that none are available.

anyone have a fix for my problem ??
