I have a 1979 175 v6 mariner. It blew the gasket out the side of the reed block just under the top set of carbs. The Motor has alwayas sneezed on start up. Is the gasket the cause or the result, or is there something else I should check while I am in there changing the gasket? The motor was running fine in some rough water and then is stalled when I slowed down and didn't want to stay running. When I got it home I saw the bulging gasket and felt the air blowing out.

A leaking gasket surely could contribute to a lean sneeze as it'll draw air from the blown area rather than through the carb. I had a similar stubborn sneeze situation with a Merc 50hp that had a blown out gasket on one of the intake covers. New gasket fixed the issue! Also got rid of the fuel residue mess, too!

I would recommend doing a compression test on the engine before you spend anymore time and money on it. This will give you a good health check of the inside of the engine. If you don't have a compression tester you can pick one up at any auto parts house.
