I noticed small red flakes as I was draining my metal 6 gallon fuel tank (for the second time).
I'm assuming its flaking from the inside.
I was wondering is there a fix for this?

Well, how about this, empty it, remove the fuel pickup assembly, dump in a coffee can full of nuts and bolts in and shake the heck out of it! Maybe it would scrape off the loose paint so you can rinse it out of there(?)

Yea, I heard that technique before.
I'm guessing it will probably only get worse over time.
I have a couple plastic tanks, but I really like my metal tank.

Thanks.

Re: red paint flakes in fuel tank

There was a tank coating that I bought at J C Whitney that I used to coat the inside of fuel tanks that had rust that had came losse on the inside of them. It is simulaier to the poly coating that you can buy for dipping tools into and give them a new gripping surface. Do not know if it is still around but with checking into. It seals the inter of the tank from leaks and is easy to use. Just take the gauge and float out and tape the hole shut , then mix and pour the coating in the tank and move it around so all the inside gets coated well. then remove the tape and dump the exccess out and let the tank and coati8ng dry for a day or so . Then replace the gauge and fuel cap and it should work for quite sometime as I have one that I did it to that was over 10 years ago. JMO

Any chance you can remember what the stuff was called?I have two or three tanks that could benefit from that.

Just checkeed out J C Whitney and they still have the sealer. Go to thier web site and in the search type in GAS TANK SEALER and it will bring it up. Cost is $57 but is enought to do several 6 Gal. tanks as it's ment for doing gas tanks on cars and trucks with alot larger tanks. Works on my tanks.

Yeah why the heck is there paint inside the tank?

Unless it was already sealed with an inferior product that is now flaking off.

Maybe something from ethanol and non-ethanol mixed together and sitting for a period of time ??

does sound like its more like "varnish" deposits than paint.

Maybe just a bad paint job? I see paint inside the spout. The bottom looks clean though.

The product you are looking for is available at most big auto parts stores, it is called KREEM fuel tank liner. follow instructions.
