Red Atom Ignition Modules??

Last year I bought a 1968 18HP Evinrude. For some reason, someone put those red Atom ignition modules on the motor. The fuel line had a small hole where it passes through the motor pan. So, I'm guessing all the oil under the cover may have gotten up to the points. Maybe whoever worked on it didn't feel like cleaning it up???

Other than oil getting on the points, is there any reason these would have been used?

I'm planning on putting in new coils, points and condensers. I'm going to pull the flywheel first to see if it's dirty under there.

Usually these where installed to take care of worn armature plates. These eleminate the need for point settings and condensers. The also fire twice to burn the fuel charge. These are nice little gadgets to will make engine start quicker, idle and run better I have found.

Re: Red Atom Ignition Modules??

I understand they stopped making these. So, I wanted to put the points and condersers back in before I have a problem with the ignition modules.

How can I tell if the armature plate is worn?

Thanks.
