rectifier problem

I have a 1992 90hp force. I noticed that the regulator had a burned spot in the epoxy. I replaced the rectifier with a Napa replacement. The system charged for a wile and now it again is not charging. I tested the AC voltage output of the 2 stator leads and it ranged from 12.5 v AC to 14.5 v AC. None of the resistance values for both the stator and regulator are within limits. Did the stator burn out this new regulator?

Re: rectifier problem

Force made various models that year and they have different part numbers for the rectifier. Can you post your model number? You may have gotten the wrong rectifier from NAPA.

Merc number is 883071A1 which is superceeded from 8174111. The part cost is 134.75. Does any part of this number cross reference to the NAPA number?

Re: rectifier problem

yes the napa part is the same and from what i found, this part replaces all rectifiers of that era. I charged my battery before going out last so I wouldn't be stranded. When I looked at the voltage at full throttle it was 13.6 and 12.6 at idle. Could the stator be week?

Re: rectifier problem

If you are getting 13.6 at full throttle it sounds like it is working. 12.6 is a fully charged battery. Outboards dont crank like car alternators do. I am not an expert here but I would say it sounds like it is working.

Re: rectifier problem

Ok went out today without charging the battery on the charger. Voltage never went above 12.5 and that was at full throttle. Anyone know if the dealers have a sure fire way to test stator alternators other than measuring resistance?
