i have a 1987 150gt the rectifier has 5 wires all the 395204 i find has 4

from what i have read the newer ones no longer have the purple one that the old ones used to its not a big deal just a new design.

when i bought my new one it was missing the purple wire when i called the company they said that they no longer require it on the newer ones

i know now the 5 wire is a 35amp the 4 wire is a 10amp

not necessarily, all the new styles are 4 wire. The 35 amp regulator has round posts that protrude from the bottom into the cooling water cavity and the two stator wires are very heavy gage. The 10-12 amp version has a flat base on the bottom of it with lighter 16 gauge yellow wires with ring terminals.

By jury rigging the wires to fit and wanting to spend over $100 additional, you can make it work.

The reason I asked is, I have a chance to get a good used 35 amp rec/reg for a good price. The only differance I seen, was the one I have, has the purple wire (5 wire), which is not used anymore on newer rec/reg as posted. So why would the wires have to be jury rigged?

35 amp regulator has heavier and different length wiring and various connectors for different engines. Make sure it is the right style also as loopers and crossflows have different bolt patterns and gaskets.
