Reconnecting a Water Pressure Gauge - 88 SPL

Without going into to much unnecessary detail, I have swapped motors on my boat and wish to reconnect the water pressure gauge that was installed for the previous motor. The prior motor had a plug that I removed that allowed the brass fitting to be installed for the gauge. The new motor, 1990 88 SPL does not have such a plug or else I haven't located it. Drilling and tapping the water jacket is not an option as this type thing normally leads to a mess if I am involved. The motor has a "pee" hole that appears to be the same thread as I have not removed it to verify. I started to "T" the line but figured this would not give me anything close the the correct pressure as the water should have a tendency to follow the path of least resistance and flow out the open line for the "pee" hole.

My question is since the motor is mounted on a pontoon where the stream cannot be seen easily can the pee hole tube simply be disconnected and the water pressure tube be connected? The first thing that comes to mind would be freezing weather, which if I remember to disconnect during the winter months to allow to drain it should be okay. The second thing does the pee tube allow any cooling effect for the engine? I know that there were engines made without the "pee" tube and the majority of the water exists elsewhere anyhow. I don't care about a precise reading but want to know that the water pump is pump water.

Mine is connected to pee hose via T-fitting and works fine.

I installed a 1996 88SPL on my boat last year. I put a "T" in the tell tail hose (about 4 inches above the pan) to connect the water pressure gauge and it works fine. I'm getting 15# of pressure at 4000 RPM's. 88SPL has a flatback and there should be a fitting in the lower right corner. Hose should be routed up and around the top of the right cylinder bank, back down to the tell tail fitting in the pan.

Water Pressure readings are relative to invidual motor performance. Given that your motor is healthy, make note of the pressure readings and use it as a guide in the future. Tell Tail prupose is to show that the cooling jackets are filling with water.

Pee stream is also more reliable than a gauge. Only thing that will typically mess up the stream is a clog which is usually easy to remove. I'd rely more heavily on the physical indicator than the electronic indicator. If the stream is weak, you can tell. (insert swollen prostate joke here). Do not bypass the pee tube by connecting directly to gauge. Just install the simple T fitting which will register on your gauge as either a pressurized system or not, and be done with it.

Thanks for the replies. I will give the T a try as your results should be representative of what I should see. I had doubt that I would see any pressure on my gauge located 10 feet of tubing away with the pee hose allowing open flow. If I could see the pee stream I wouldn't even need the gauge but the railing on the pontoon does not allow me to see the motor. Needless to say if it shows 5 psi when it really might be 15 psi I don't care as long as I have a point of reference to what it is now where I can catch a problem in the future before it does damage. I haven't been able to locate the correct size T yet locally but the only place I have checked has been the local chain auto parts stores. Based on my research the pee line is a 3/16 and I will have to verify my tubing size to the gauge tonight. Thanks again.
