I want to by a used wave runner for my 15 year old daughter. Been boating for awhile, but know nothing about wave runners/jet skis. Would appreciate any insight you can offer on what I need to look for and brands/models to buy. I really don't have a price range yet because I'm not certain what a decent used one will cost. Thoughts on what I will likely be looking to spend would therefore also be appreciated.

Yamaha VX or FX: 4 stroke engine, very reliable (all the ski rental places use them). Pretty easy to maintain, nice stable ride, and uses regular gas. I think these models also have a "learner" mode so you can set it to limit the max rpms while she learns to ride.

Used ones will vary in price from $4500-$7500 depending on the model and number of hours.

I can't keep my 15 year old daughter off my FX. :)

A little less costly would be a 93-96 seadoo. I have had 2 and they start right up and very reliable. cost used about $1000 each. 2 Stroke so they do pollute more and burn thru the gas quickly. look for one with low usage if possible.

Anything with the word YAMAHA on it is a good investment. I have 3 mid 90's 3 seater WaveVentures, all have over 300 hrs., only thing I have ever had to replace was the batteries that eventually wore out. Mine are all 2 stroke, but I would recommend getting a 4 stroke, cleaner, newer, better gas mileage than a 2 stroke, and if you want reliability, get a YAMAHA.
