I am having a heck of a time finding a new carburetor for my 1983 25hp Johnson OB.
Every website I have checked has it listed as "obsolete" with no updated part number available (#0392020)
Before you ask, I have rebuilt the current carb several times...would like to start new for the next 20 years of operation...

Thanks all.

EZ, thanks for the advice. I looked at all of the above...and the selection on Ebay was rough for my part #. I was hoping someone might know of a specialty parts resource. Thanks though!

I myself do not believe that one would ever have to replace a carburetor on one of these motors.------They are simple and not much can go wrong with them.-----What is the motor doing / not doing to lead you to believe that it needs a complete new carburetor ??

Maybe Dan Gano can help you at the link below. Good luck!

Home Page

EDIT: You might also look for carb #0393057 from a 35HP 1983 model since it uses the same intake manifold gasket #0325092 as your 25HP. It appears to still be available and could add some power to your 30+ year old motor.

Geesh I just sold a whole parts motor that had a good carb on it.

What is your motor doing / not doing ?------If carburetor is left dry in between use it will rarely need any attention !---In my area used carburetors / parts motors are plentyful and reasonably priced.-Last one picked up was a 1984 - 25 HP electric start $ 40, minus lower unit.

Part of your problem is that you are looking for the wrong part number. The factory list shows 393020. There are two USA dealers, each of which has one new (unused) carb in stock. Give one of them a call with your credit card, this part number and you'll be in business.

Why do you need a new carb? Sounds like you have one?

I second Willyclay's suggestion. Dan Gano helped me out with a lot of hard-to-find parts when I refurbished my 1963 75hp.

Unless your carb is completely broken in half or even crushed, I see no reason to replace it. O/B carbs, unlike lawn mower carbs, don't have governors that constantly adjust the butterfly plates and shafts and cause oblong shaft wear to stay at a set RPM. So there is near zero wear in those shaft areas. So that leaves high and or low speed jets and of course the float and needle and seat. All those parts are replaceable and easily obtained. So a serious good cleaning and replace parts that need replaced (a good carb rebuild kit) and your existing carb will work exactly like any new carb. JMHO!

Fairwinds Marina in Annapolis, MD is a good source for used and obsolete parts -- good cross listing and system for retrieval. They do some selling through Ebay. Tray a Google search, or find them on Ebay -- but recommend a phone call. Sometimes a little prickly, but good parts source. Agree you probably shouldn't replace the whole carb. Check on a kit. Come armed with some part numbers and specific questions, and give them a call.

Re: Recommend a good source for older Johnson/Evinrude Parts?

hey mfay -- lots of folks here eager and willing to consult during another rebuild, but need info. on what it's doing or not doing if you want to go that route. Hard to help without the front end info. If you price out a carb (or kit and related fuel parts) at the source I mentioned, ask for Brian. They buy up a lot of marina parts in the area, and have quite a backstock.

Re: Recommend a good source for older Johnson/Evinrude Parts?

Hi All, sorry for the hiatus on answering questions...lots of personal stuff going on (new baby!).
So, to get everyone caught up...

First of all, those who mentioned that I should not need to replace the carb, you were right! But...I did thinking it would fix it :(
Here is what happened:
After I replaced the stator assembly (which unknowingly DID fix the overall problem...which is a WHOLE story unto itself on a different thread), the engine would not idle correctly.
I rebuilt my old carb, reinstalled...but engine would stillnot idle. So, threw in the towel and bought a new one. Installed new carb, SAME issue still existed. That said, we did eventually figure it out...and it was the old carb, kind of... :)

The old carb's idle adjustment needle had somehow formed a slight bend in it (no clue how), but it did. Once I replaced the stator assembly, the timing had adjusted (my guess is the old owner had set the timing to the carb with the bent needle for idle), but still could not find the sweet spot for the old carb to work. Again, assuming the slightly worn/bent needle was the issue.

Either way, we were able to find the sweet spot between timing and idle adjustment after following the Johnson/Evinrude step-by-step process...but MAN, it was frustrating. The new carb has about a 1/8 turn sweet spot...and it took an hour to find.

Bottom line, had I replaced the needle on the old carb, I would have been good. So, you were all correct...but, I can add this to my experience vault for next time. :)

Thanks all!

**Sidenote, I did talk to Dan Gano, and will definitely use him in the future for parts...great guy!

Excellent!

There are other places out there besides Dan Gano that have the parts that you're looking for, but you'd be very hard pressed to find a more reasonable person to deal with. One should consider the entire buying experience when choosing a parts supplier.
