Recoil starter

I have an older 4hp mercury with the recoil in the hood. It retracks very slowly and sometimes not at all. Before I pull it apart and am met with springs flying, any ideas how to fix it? Thanks. Bill

What year? Ser. Nr. will help picture too. Most times the problem is old grease so if we know what you've got we can help.
