I have two questions and would appreciate any help:

1. Where can I find a new (or used) recoil spring for the starter rope? The tip of my current one broke off, so I was also wondering if I could heat up the end and bend it to form a new tip to catch the gear.

2. I hear there's not much difference between a 9.9 and a 15 hp Sportwin. What's the difference? Can I make the 9.9 more powerful?

Thanks in advance,
Ron

Rgeis.... On the 1974 9,9hp, the only difference between the 9.9hp and the 15hp is the carburetor. The manual starter spring can be heated and reshaped with little effort.

The manual starter spring is OMC number 318944 and lists for about $35.00. I have a good one left in stock for $23.00 if you can't find one or have a problem repairing the one you have. Good Luck....... ReevesJ32@aol.com

Joe,
Thanks for the reply. What do you suggest heating the spring with? Would a cig. lighter be sufficient, or do I need a torch?

Also, where can I find a 15hp carb, and what do they cost?

Thanks again.

Also, how can I tell that a 15hp carb hasn't already been put on the motor? It is, after all, almost 30 yrs old, and moves my 12ft aluminum boat pretty quickly.

A hand held propane torch with a pencil tip would do the job nicely, available at K-Mart, Wal*Mart, most everywhere. Telling the difference between a 9.9 and a 15 carburetor..... I don't recall what the casting numbers or what the throat size differences are. The 9.9 is of course a smaller size throat than the 15hp. Perhaps someone else will jump in here with those diameters.

rgeis,Instead of heating the spring in an attempt to reform the end I would recommend you get the one that Joe is offering for under 25 bucks. He'll treat you right.Reheating spring steel will likely cause the area to become brittle and succeptible to future breakage.
New carburetor will cost between $220-$240.Don't know throat demensions but the bowl orifice difference is .054 on the 15 hp and .038 on the 9.9 hp.

Rgeis..... Just to be on the up & up, I double checked that spring. It's a used one but in excellent condition. $20 would cover it if you need it and that includes shipping etc. Not trying to pressure you into a decision, just wanted to clarify that it is not new.

The ouside visual dimensions of both carbs look the same, the inside of the throat is different. the 9.9 internal throat is .625 in dia. The 15hp internal throat is .875 in dia.
