Recoil Problems

My '73 Merc 200 (20hp) won't recoil the start rope after the motor warms up. I want to take off the bolt over the recoil housing but think that I may screw up the timing if I take off that top bolt.<br /><br />What may I expect to find under that bolt. I think a spring might be broken or something.<br /><br />When the motor starts and we run in gear, the rope retracts and everything is ok until the next start.<br /><br />Suggestions?

You need a Repair Manual, Riley.<br /><br />If the rope retracts after the engine is running the recoil mechanism probably just need lubrication, but working on an outboard without a manual is an invitation for multiplied problems.<br /><br />Good luck.
