Re: Recently Reunited Friend asking to borrow money

Have any of you gone through this kind of situation? How did it pan out?

I've gone through the "loaning money to someone I knew wasn't respensible" thing numerous times when younger. It always, ALWAYS lead to me getting blamed for something, just for agreeing to lend them money. Either I was too pushy for wanting the money back (at all!) or greedy for saying no, or betraying the trust for questioning my ever getting repayed (after, say, a YEAR).

Hate to say it, but you're in a lose-lose situation. No matter what, that guy will see you as the enemy, either tomorrow or a month from now. If you give him the money, he'll see you as an ATM. Get out if you can, otherwise distance yourself as best as you can.

..and I normally strive to see the best in people.. I've just learned this lesson too many times over to leave any hope for honesty in the poor.

Re: Recently Reunited Friend asking to borrow money

We own boats.....therefore we don't have extra money lying around.

Ha! Ain't that the truth. That's what I love about this site. Most of us here are just regular joes who have to make sacrifices to support our boating habits. Heck I think a good majority of us found this place because we were googling how to fix something on our boats we didn't want to spend the $$ for someone else to fix.

And no, I don't think the OP should loan the money. I mean seriously, who even asks to borrow money from pretty much anyone other than close family?

Re: Recently Reunited Friend asking to borrow money

I had a friend that is a drug addict. For 6 months I was taking him to NA meetings, driving him to and from work, and he was clean for 6 months.

Its hard sometimes to differentiate between carrying the message and carrying the body.

If NA was giving free drugs away no-one would need a ride, they'd find their way there even if they had to walk, on broken glass.

Unless they have that same conviction to get clean its a waste of time.

Last week, I built 2 flower planters for a "friend of mine". They were shaped like a cross. They were 69" long, and 49" wide, and 5" deep. Setting on a stand 24" off of the ground. He paid for the material. "SAID" that he'd pay me. I haven't seen, nor heard from him. He don't answer his phone !!!! We had been talking for 6 months every day, at least 4-5 times/day. I know where he lives, but it isn't worth it.

Carma will bite him in the butt !!!!!!!! ;)

Re: Recently Reunited Friend asking to borrow money

My wife and I are the money people in the family even though we are in our 30's. We don't flaunt it and other than our large home, haven't changed our lifestyle since we were young. No one that knows us dares ask for money from us. If someone did I would be as blunt as my vocabulary allows. I have no tolerance for drugs, lazyness or people with their hands out and the list goes on farther. I am certain there must be a government program for people that need money for drugs as there is for everything else.

Re: Recently Reunited Friend asking to borrow money

Very risky business to loan a "friend" $$. It will always end up bad, and you will lose a friendship 90% of the time. Same thing goes for business partners/friends, if you value the relationship you shouldn?t go into business. I always look at it this way, and if I decide to loan it, I never expect anything back. One of my ladies I date, is single, and a mom, I give her $ on many occasions, because I know how hard it is to raise and pay for a teenager. And her daughter is a awesome child, who I love to help. With no children of my own, I feel good helping them both out.
Now when a stranger or distant friend asks, that's easy, not happening, and I'll top it off with, "why would you ask me? We hardly even know each other"? And I keep asking until they feel the same way I did, when they asked me.

And don?t assume it's drugs or addiction, many folks just have no conscience and will ask anyone anything.
