So yesterday I could not get the trailer off of the ball. I had to remove the pin from the trailer hitch then drive the truck forward. Once I did that it was still hard to get the ball off of the receiver even though it was no longer attached to the truck. Does the ball and lock on the receiver need to have some lube on it?

I had the same problem 2 months ago. I ended up pulling the pin like you did. I swore that would not happen again. I greased and oiled the heck out of it and it works fantastic now.

Thanks guys. What else does not help my situation is that the trailer and boat are 8,500lbs. I will give it a go.

The locking mechanism in the tongue hitch may be hanging up, so be sure to lube all that-- My favorite lube for such things is lithium grease in a spray can. Comes out fairly liquid so it gets everywhere, then thickens up afterwards. Spray the hell out of it, then wipe up the excess afterwards...

Another thought- have you recently (or ever?) hit the tongue into the ball or receiver while backing the truck up? Most of us have, and most of the time nothing happens, but with enough force the ball pocket can be tweaked into a slight oval shape that you can't even tell by looking at it, but will still cause an interference fit with the hitch ball. Once you're greased up, ensure the release/lock mechanism is fully retracted, then insert a spare hitch ball- if there's interference, check if the ball is touching the sides of the pocket or the lock parts...
