What is the general opinion on a rebuilt powerhead from Mercury. My motor was 14 months OUT of warranty, and Mercury, is going to sell me a 'rebuilt' one from them for $1600 with a year warranty. The dealer wants $800 labor and there is a $800 core charge. 3 questions: How does a rebuilt compare if done right? Is this a good price for a factory rebuilt 200hp carb. saltwater 2000 model? Should i be happy with spending $3200 minus whatever i get for my core on a 2000 motor that broke a ring? The broken ring was in no way my fault according to the dealer.

Re: Rebuilt vs. New...HELP

Rebuilds depend on who does them, how they were broken in, what parts were replaced, was block repaired, etc, etc. You can get 20 hrs or 2000 hrs out of a rebuild.

Reputable builders will give a one yr warranty usually, never accept any less. A factory remanufactured powerhead may be subject to certain specifications that may not be as stringent as new powerheads, the factory techs can probably inform you of this type thing. Ultimately its a judgement call, but Im sure $1600 sure beats the price of a new powerhead by several thousand.

Re: Rebuilt vs. New...HELP

is this 2.5 L. if so Mercury uses brand new cranks in all 2.5s. Theres a 50-50 chance the pistons are new too. All parts are within original factory specifications or they are thrown out. Other than resleaving or boring over size, blocks are never "repaired". Also they are built by hand one at a time. Remans can fail too, but for the money you can't go wrong.
