Rebuilt engine quality

So I have a dilemma that I need input on.

Problem:
Two of the four cylinders had low test numbers the other two are fine.
Exhaust manifold needs to be replaced.
Moister in the cylinders. It actually destroyed a new starter (got my money back).

Action of service: new valve job and new exhaust manifold
Estimated cost of repair $2200
Warranty: one year

Or

New rebuilt engine
Estimated cost $3200
Warranty: two years

Concerns:
How would a valve job increase cylinder pressure?

The engine will also die when I put the engine in idle after the engine runs for a while. It won't start up for another twenty minutes at the most.

There are many reasons why you have low compression... Stuck valve, bad headgasket, damaged ring... Are these cylinders adjacent to each other? What type of engine you have?

Re: Rebuilt engine quality

For the difference in price you are better off getting a completely rebuilt engine. If you have a strong top half and weak bottom half you are looking for trouble down the road. To answer your question about a valve job. If the valves or valve seats aren't sealing correctly because they are worn that would cause low compression. Fixing them (if that is in fact the problem) would fix the compression issue. Low compression could also be bad piston rings or even bad pistons. That's another reason to go with a complete rebuild where everything top to bottom is good.

Yeah the guy said he wouldn't know indefinitely until he cracked the motor open which also has me worried about the price quota he gave me. It's an omc 3l 4cylinder. Would a rebuilt motor and a new exist manifold fix the moisture getting in the motor problem or is there other factors of moisture get into an engine?

Moisture can be getting in through any of the above mentioned places, a manifold or even if you just take short trips with your boat and the engine doesn't have time to stay at temperature long enough to burn off the condensation that forms normally in your oil pan.

I never took short trips I'm sure that isn't a problem I'm just going to shoot for a rebuilt motor

only $850 for a complete rebuild and new cam and bearings? for that kind of money if i new they did good work i would ship my motor there just to have it done for that kind of money, just for the sake of having it done.

Re: Rebuilt engine quality

After doing some shopping around I got a price of $2700 installed. Or 1115 just for the motor. Not 3500. My mistake. But I do need a new exhaust manifold. It's just hard to find a creditable shop who will work on OMC motors. It's hard to pull the trigger on a 1000-3000 investment.

I just feel that if it's going to cost money for them
To work on my motor and try to fix it the best they can the labor hours will rack up into a price on a rebuilt engine.

Re: Rebuilt engine quality

Just have marine shop pull it, then send the engine someplace like an automotive rebuilder who can swap in a long block. Then have the shop install engine. Might be cheaper

I really think it would be wise if you have the resources to pull the engine or pay a shop just to pull it for you go that route.
any good engine builder doesn't care if it is OMC or not. it is just another engine from oil pan to valve cover. nothing special when it comes to the hard components. any good engine builder will inspect all the hard components when going through an engine. as long as it looks good just scratch up the cylinder walls ....re ring each hole.....crank bearings (maybe polish crank) cam bearings.....gasket kit ect!
maybe ask around at some of the auto shops on who is good around town that builds engines.

$1100 fresh overhaul
$? manifold
$500 for pull/install.

under 2000$

I bought a manifold on go 2 marine for 300 that price included shipping. Granted my engine is a 2.5 but I think I saw the 2.3 also
