I recently had a 1976 70hp evinrude rebuilt with factory cast pistons. The mechanic said that I would not have to use double oil for the breakin period because the pistons were cast not forged..He said that I should fallow the owner manual's instructions which say to use evinrude oil at 50-1,with restrictions on how I use it for the first 8 hrs.Is this right? I have seen instructions on this forum that said to use double oil for the first 8 hrs. Which do you recommend? Would it hurt to use double oil just to be safe? Thanks

Re: rebuilt engine breakin

Here is what I was told.

Don't take the engine above 3500 rpms the first 10 hours. Use a 25 to 1 ratio.

Premix.

birdman
It's not so much the pistons you have to worry about as it is the rings and cylinders. Definitly double the oil for the break in period, no matter what you've been told....
