rebuilt 470 starting issues

just rebuilt my 470, new bearings, rings, had the head done, gaskets ect. First time rebuilding anything so I was very cautious double and triple checking every step.

I spun the crank by hand throughout the build and everything was fine. I have it in the boat now and it won't spin any longer. The only thing that I didn't have attached was the flywheel and the outdrive prior to having it in the boat. I was able to get about a rotation and a half out of it before it stopped. I"m at a loss. I can rotate it backwards but once it gets to that same spot in the correct rotation it stops.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: rebuilt 470 starting issues

Are you trying to rotate it by hand or with the starter if by hand its gonna be real hard with the outdrive on... i believe you can rotate it by using the prop but if it wont kick over with the starter something got mucked up

Pull the outdrive to eliminate any problems there and attempt to bar the engine over again.

Failing complete rotation with the outdrive removed, I suspect you have inadvertently installed the incorrect bolts in the flywheel (too long).

That's why you should always start the engine BEFORE you install it back in the boat.

Take the drive back off and see if the engine will crank over.
