Hi all. Great forum. I have been reading while I was searching after a motor and you guys have been a great help.
I got a 115 mercury from 1975 and it looks really good. I got it for $250 so there should be a few box to fix it up with. I have between 130 and 140# on cylinder 2-5, but only 113 on cylinder 1. I will try to follow your decarbonize advises, but I just wonder how much I should expect it to cost if I send it to a marina and have it rebuilt.

Regards
Mike

Mike, rebuilding a 25 year old motor is not an economically viable option.....personally, with what you have I would do some basic maintenance/repair and run it till it dies....after 25 years, this motor is not going to have a bore that meets specifications [means oversize pistons] reed blocks will have the crankshaft labrynth seals worn out [necessary for idle quality] at $270 apeice X 3.....gaskets,carb kits, main jets [gotta jet up .002" for the fuel we got now] water pump impeller, gearlube, spark plugs, etc,etc....you get the idea....retail in a shop using OEM parts, you will blow 3 grand+...and for what? a very nice running old motor that you cannot recoup your investment from.....that being said, I to like the old 'tower of power' and shed a tear whenever I see another hit the salvage pile....

MikeMike,

I agree with odd1 and johnkc. I'm in the same boat with a 20 year old Evinrude. Mine hasn't run in 15 years. I'm going to do whatever is cheap once I find out if it has even decent compression.

I'll take care of it best I can and wo'nt let it die because of something simple-like a water pump. If it it grenades I won't have alot invested-just like you.

I poured decarbonizer direct into all cylinders and was letting it soak for a couple of hours. Then I turned the motor without the plugs to get it out again and tested the compression again. Now it is 137 on cylinder 1 and between 145 and 150 on cylinder 2-5. GREAT!! I have never heard the motor run and it's over a year since it last was running acording to the previous owner. I gave it a little splash of gas in each cylinder and got the plugs in and WOW.... just one little touch on the key and the motor was spinning.
One thing though, the "pisser" was only dripping so I need to have my water pump checked. How much should I expect to payu for a job like that?

Merry Chrismas everyone.

Regards
Mike

mike,24.00for impeller,4-5.00for gaskets 1hour labor..................100.00for parts &labor .but also you should drain L .U. and pressure test the L.U. then refill with fresh gear lube, probably another??50.00??depending on your service shop. the shift shaft in these units are known for rusting around the seal and leaking there . also run some power tune ,from merc, thru this motor, maybe you only have stuck rings , and this will help clean the pistons. what is the compression on#6 cyl? also if &when you get her runnin reduce the maximum timing by 2 degrees this will help the engine run longer on the fuels that we have today .and make sure that you prop her at 5500 rpm with your normal load with throttle wide open and trimmed out if you have trim

a drip is too low, but these motors have very low water pump pressure anyway. Dont expect more than a weak tricklE at idle anyway (2psi). A little dirt in the pisser could easily block the flow. But change impeller anyway.

MikeMike,

A water pump is cheap insurance. If I remember right, # 1 is on the top of a "whistling silo". It's the last one to get H2O. Might be the reason the compression is a little lower in that one. It might have got a "little warm" at one point.

Once you have the H2O pump replaced, run it on the muffs and hold your hand on the top cylinder. It should not burn you. About 140 degrees.
