Hi,

I'm rebuilding a pump and want to verify something. Each of the chambers is held together by torx screws, there are no gaskets. There is no evidence that gasket sealer was used in the original assembly.

Anyone rebuilt one of these and should I leave it bare or put a bead of sealer on anyways?

The rolled lips on the diaphragms are the seals, plus the '98 and later pumps also have an oring around them.

Use a touch of outboard oil to help the lips in positioning.

Are you following the service manual's instructions step by step?

Re: Rebuilding VRO pump. Sealer?

Seahorse,

My service manual P/N 507616 Which is supposed to cover my engine doesn't have a section on rebuilding the fuel pump.

The manual states it's for "CU" 35A thru 55. I have a J40TLCUD, which is supposed to be a 1987. BUT the manual is copywrited in 1986 and the one pic of the fuel pump shows the one with the cover on the side that you can remove.

The pump I'm working on has P/N 174570 imprinted on it. That's listed as the correct pump everywhere I've checked.

I bought the boat/motor new in late 1986 and I had it in the shop just a few times during the first year I had it. Don't remember any major replacement of parts. Had a after break-in check up by the dealer and a before season tune up. After that I took over maintenace. So as far as I know the original pump is on there.

Do you (or any one) have a link or source for the rebuild instructions?

BTW, I'm working on a spare pump I got cheap on ebay. It's identical in configuration and part number to the one that's on the engine.

It's really kind of simple to assemble, but I am always open to hints, tricks and advice.

If the pump has a brown outlet fitting on it and 3 wires , or no wires, coming from the aft end, it is not worth rebuilding unless you are going to use it as a fuel pump only. The '92 and later pumps were a lot better and worth the hassle and expense of repairs.

Go to the FAQ section F. for more info and history of the VRO pumps.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000028

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html
