Rebuilding My Lower Unit????

I have a 1975 3cylinder 650 mercury that I know I'm goin to have to rebuild my lower unit. My real question here is Is it feasable for me to attempt this rebuild on my own or is this a very specialized area of mechanics that really requires a pro? Before I get flamed here I already did a comprehensive search here to see if my question has been answered and apparently it has not. I appreciate any and all opinions/facts! Thank you.

hello
there are some specialty tools you will have to purchase. may be best to take the unit to a dealer. especially if you have no prior exp setting gears.
but f you purchase the shop manual and some of the tools its a feasible project at home.

Hey rodbolt, I know I can purchase a replacement lower unit from here for about $650.00 after core refund, would buying the tools and replacement parts justify doin myself or would be cheaper to just get replacement - inyouropinion of course.

They are available on Ebay for about $150 quite often.

Not trying to answer or speak for rodbolt, but adding my 2 cents worth....
If you are talking gear and clutch dog replacing,or prop/drive shaft parts plus tools,I'd buy the replacement (is it rebuilt?)
If you just need to reseal your unit, parts aren't too bad, fewer tools are needed.Reseal it.

DHP
