I am trying to rebuild a steering grip assembly on a 1980, 15 hp Evinrude. I have a drawing. My question has to do with the control shaft bushing, washer and spring and it's position on the gear shaft assembly. If it's positioned where the flat end changes into the round shaft, it looks like it would interfere with the screw hole. In some drawings they show a keeper. Should it rest against the keeper and if so, how far back should the keeper be positioned. Any info in this relationship would be helpful. Thanks, this is my first question.

Not exactly sure what you're referring too, but if you are talking about part #62 screwing down against part number #66, no, it won't hit. Because the screw is there to hold the outer assembly onto the inter housing assembly and the shaft going through the inter assembly would not be touched when #62 is tightened. Hope that helps... :noidea:

Thanks but I was wondering how far back the rear end of bushing #55 was from the flat end of #66 and what stops the bushing from going back farther down the shaft? Thanks.

It is a pita to get put together. I had to file down a wrench to fit in there. It is slow going but you will eventually get there.

How does the motor run. I am thinking about repairing one I have. Any major issues?
