I have an 89 M40C tohatsu that hit a gravel bar.
I thought it only bent the prop shaft but after machining it still has a terrible sound coming from the around the powerhead when I attempt to start it.
The dealer in town wants me to just buy a new motor & won't even look at it.
How can I go about rebuilding this ?? Where should I start ? I think it must be either a drive shaft or rod in crank case.
Also will the service guide for the 92-2000 work as I can't find a clymers guide for an 80's model.
Thanks,

New discovery ...it will go in to forward & neutral just fine but the shifter will not go smoothly or completly into reverse.
