Howdy all,
I picked up a 200HP 1994 outboard that was winterised a number of years ago. I got it to start and run, decided to rebuild the carbs for PM and to make sure everything is clean.

Took them off and one apart today. There are a lot more threaded brass inserts to unscrew than other (OMC) carbs I have worked on, ALSO, there are adjustable needles!

The Merc service manual says to count the number of turns they are at now and install new ones to that same setting. For some reason each carb kit I have came with 4 needles?

Any further adjustment after install? A friend mentioned syncing the carbs, I have no idea how to do that.

Thanks,
John

The most important thing you can do is to link and sync the carbs when you put them back on...make sure you use the correct and new intake gasket between the carb and manifold.. Not trusting what others before me have done, I would take out the jets which you should do anyway, and make sure the right jet is in the right hole. They will not be all the same. The same goes for the little air jets in the venturi part of the carb..Keep in mind when looking at the carbs from the front, the top left venturi feeds the opposite cylinder...that means the starboard side top feeds the port cyclinder..Get the manual and make sure you look at the jetting. Not saying it's wrong but you need to take them out anyway to clean the carb..I bought a boat with a 200h.p that we just rebuild with no hours that was jetted for a 175...Glad I checked....

The devil's in the details, and so is great success. Pay close attention to which carb is where, (they are numbered to reflect that) proper jets in the right spots, (look it up, don't guess) float level just right, the right idle adjust needle, etc.

There's 2 different idle needles possible in that series of carbs. Match the ones you have as close as you can. Discard the other 2.

Thanks for the replies. They are numbered 1,2,3 stamped on the bodies so that is no problem.

Should the air jets and needles get any loc-tite. I will re-read the Merc manual, but IIRC it mentioned that.

How difficult is syncing the carbs?

That went well :)

Carb 1 looked brand new inside.
Carb 2 was clean but had an out of adjustment float.
Carb 3 was dirty.

All went back together easily, ran it this AM in a barrel, ran like a top.

Now to figure out how to silence the constant overheat beep.
