These are estimated figures. Shop water pump job - $125 plus parts, probably more.
Do-it-yourself - $60 parts, $30 manual, knowledge gained - priceless

Rebuild waterepump on 1980 70hp

Hi Guys,

After reading a bit on these threads I think it will be a good idea to replace the impellor/rebuild waterpump on my 70 HP 1980 Johnson (that has been sitting idle for 7 or eight years).

Does the kit come with any instructions ? If I need to buy a service manual as well as the kit I might as well get a shop to do it.

Any suggestions

Cheers

Brad

parts are only 23 dollars, manual s can be had on ebay for even cheaper if you look real hard.

hello
if it sat that long you will need the water pump kit with a housing,a t-stat, pressure relief grommets a t-stat gasket 3 carb kits and a fuel pump. ya may want to use new lines and plugs as well. systems deteriorate rapidly with no use. fuel turns to an acidic sludge.
god luck and keep posting

Thanks for all the replies guys. I had the maiden voyage yesterday , ya couldnt wipe the smile off my face (wind managed to wipe the hat from my head though).

Rod, Seeing everything ran O.K with plenty of water out the return do you still think I need to do everything that you have recommended.

If it is needed I will try to save up and do it as I would rather spend a little now instead of heaps later on.

Thanks for the detailed response Rod , much aprreciated

hello
glad it all worked. just remember its a very high performance two stroke that runs at or near its rated horsepower for extended periods of time. the cooling and fuel subsystems dont have to fail, just degrade some and bad things happen. we dont wish to see a post and pics about scuffed pistons and bores.
but in the end its your call as I am not looking at it.
good luck and keep posting

Brad, the impellor is made of rubber. Ever seen the cracks in a car tire that has been sitting for 7 years.

I agree with Walker. Get a manual and change that impeller. Which is better the cost of a water pump rebuild or the price of a new motor. My 1985 75hp peed a good stream before I rebuilt the pump. When disassemled it I found the impeller crack and worn. The upper housing had a piece of the metal cup worn through, the metal friction plate had a goove worn through. This motor sat for 5 years before I got my hands on it. When I got done it was peeing like a race horse. Just my two cents.

Thanks again guys, I might get a manual and have a go myself (was a diesel mechanic in a previous life). Is ebay the place to look for manuals. If so do i just have to get a manual for my specific model/year (1980 70hp jono). If someone has one could they let me know the exact title if possible.

Cheers

Brad
