hope someone can shed some light on this nightmare. here goes. motor has good compression. finally has proper spark and fuel flow. when the engine is reved to about 3200 - 3600 a VERY high pitched sound comes out of the engine. very loud and has to be shut down imediately. i have been told by the mechanic that he thinks its the bearings in the crankshaft.

if i do decide to tear down and rebuild what are the other things that should be taken care of and looked while the engine is rebuilt. rings??

thanks for your help.

crosley

crosley,

When one tears into an outboard, you can just about bet on replacing the following:

1. Rings.

2. Bearings.

3. All seals and gaskets.

4. Pistons-sometimes, but not always.

Figure $2-300.00 per cylinder if you do the work yourself. That's probably a slightly low estimate, considering it is a foreign built engine.

What year is your motor? If it is an early model('89-'91) you have probably lost the center main bearing. If the crank surface is ok and you replace that bearing along with the other parts mentioned by the previous poster DON'T put it back together the way it came apart. There is a different sequence for the crank seal rings which will prevent the problem from reoccuring. If you get that far call me 804-758-4131 and I will fax you the changed seal ring arrangement.
