I have a 1988 Johnson 48HP outboard that I have been told needs to be rebuilt. Is it worth getting rebuilt and what kind of expenses am I looking at? Also, can you recomend someone in the Orlando, FL area to get the job done.

The flywheel will only make a quarter turn then locks. It always locks at the same point. I was told the most likely cause is from bad cylenders.

Re: Rebuild question

Jim,
I would definatly get a professional opinion or two on weather your outboard needs rebuilt.
As far as being worth rebuilding, I would guess you could probably get the job done for around 1000.00 give or take. Can you replace the motor for that.

I rebuild outboards all year round and I have rebuilt motors much older than yours. Customers always tell me " I cant replace it for what it costs to rebuild"

Maybe I'm too cheap? Huh... thats a thought!

Just kiddin, good luck
