My 79 235hp evinrude took a ride on its own down the highway. Lower unit took a good hit and my question is replace lower unit? or look for another motor? I can get lower unit replaced for about $600, but who knows how long the power head will last. Is it worth it?
thanks

I don't think anyone on the forum can give you an answer on this one bigdog. To much in the hat so to say. Did the engine give you good service? Or was it a pain in the butt?? 79" is getting up there in years but you got to look at your own situation as far as finances is concerned and make the decision for your self. A comparable engine is an investment. Myself, well, I'd look for something newer. But that's me.

Re: rebuild or look for another?

Won't speak for others, but I was recently faced with a near identical OMC 235 decision...

Here's what I found... a GOOD used OMC motor of that HP rating and vintage sells for between $2,500 -to- $4,000 ("iffy" motors obviously least $$$) This size motor ranges up to $8,000 (for later year models, and whether it's Carbs or FI, etc...)

A new motor of that size will set you back in the neighborhood of $11,000 -to- $13,000 (more if you have no patience, and or willingness to search for deals...)

For me and my situation, that made the $1800 re-build/repair costs decision a pretty easy one...

Good Luck, Obiwan Jeeper

I have two OMC 235HP's listed on E-Ebay right now. You can have them both (1 is running excellent) for the price the rebuild will cost you. I want $2400 for the pair. Get yourself a good lower unit and a complete spare motor, one shot.

i think i would replace and keep it.
especially if you like the motor to begin with.
if its not good for you or no longer suits your needs, than part it out.

Re: rebuild or look for another?

hey guys,
my thinking on this when it comes to my motor fixing is:

to rent a boat like yours or mine will cost about $50.00 an hour. that's roughly 12 hours of use out of your $600 lower unit swapping/fixing. I'm sure you'll get much more use out of it so the cost is off set that way.

just my 2 cents.

by the way, bigdog, that's not a bad price for a new or rebuilt lower unit.
