Hi Guys
Back again only with diffrent question on my 1960 Johnson 5.5 lower unit.
As I got started on this engine i went and took off the lower unit and replaced the Finn.
And now that i got it running i done a water test witch turned out to be i think not good It seems that i am not getting the spray out of the exhaust that i should started getting little warm so did not run to many times a couple maybe.
Could i have installed the Finn wrong? the intake housing should not get hot to the touch should it?.
And one other thing if it has a thermostat i did not replace it,so please tell me what i did wrong. Thanks phil

Re: Rebuild lower unit

are you sure the water tube made it into its grommets on both ends?

when you say Finn im guessing you meant impeller. did you get the drive key in it? if you want to see if it is pumping water, remove the lower unit, submerge it in water, and use a drill to turn the drive shaft. water should spray out of the tube.

search for a post i made called "my experience with a 6hp cooling system" or something along those lines. it will describe to you how to tell where your blockage is should you find it is pumping water but not cooling.

Re: Rebuild lower unit

I believe he means his skeg.

If you did not touch the cooling system at all, other than pulling the gearcase and removing the skeg, look at the water line as mentioned.
