They are continually pushing, more hours, more days, more, more, do it with less people.

My work schedule has had me scheduled for 12 days of work in a row, most of them (9) have been 12 hour days. I am supposed to have Saturday and Sunday off, then do another 12 day stretch.

But wait..... now they are trying to force us to work this weekend.
Against state labor laws which require at least one 24 hour period of rest in every 7 day work week.

Really, isn't 132 hours in 12 days enough?

They have no clue. We went through this 2 years ago with the last stupidvisor. Now we have to fight it again.

Getting sick of this.

oh man that sucks, you know my dad used to tell me when I was growing up *find a job that you love, and you will never work another day in you life* but after that many hours in a week, I would hate any job:eek: as for me I'm a fireman and work a stright 48hrs, but then I have four days off to enjoy my boat projects:D

Re: Really getting ticked at my employers.

My job did that to me awhile back. I complained and was told it was an at will work place. So, I started using my sick days on the days that I know they needed me most. So they compromised, I now work 5 days a week, off on the weekends, but I'm on call every friggen day and hour of the year. At least they quit calling me for piddley stuff.

In your case, your hours should be noted by an auditor. The auditor can report the excessive hours to the labor board. Could be some compensation coming your way.

Re: Really getting ticked at my employers.

roscoe,

Those hours are insane. You are putting in more hours a week than a frenchman puts in a month. I think this should be a clear message that it is time to find a new job. What a bunch of jerks. Want to live in Whitewater?

40hrs = work week
45hrs = everyones work week
50hrs = heavy work week
55hrs = exceptional work week
60hrs = highly compensated work week
70hrs = retarded minded work week.
77hrs = slavery

Even the threat of a Union would get their atention. I'm sure there are Unions in Madison that would be a good source of information with the benefit of being based in the state capitol. But on the other hand, I'm sure the ownership has plenty of union-busting strategies ready and waiting, and anyone participating in forming a union might face a pretty tough future there.

Perhaps a bug in their ear might be a better strategy. Willow Foods in Beaver Dam has done Pizza. Subcontracting a portion might relieve the strain in Medford. ;)

Hang in there and good luck.

Re: Really getting ticked at my employers.

Here what I did, the BS was getting real bad with there {bosses} demands and no respect for anybody. So I started a blog on Livejournal "The XXXX-XXXXX Workers Information and Complaint Site" I printed a dozen little flyers and dropped a few in the bathroom and lockerroom. Well within a 1/2 hour I saw several bosses viewing it site on there computers. To make a long story short, out of a shop with 300+ workers I logged 176 different IP addresses including staff IP addresses. Six weeks after the start I got a post from the head of corparte HR that in the next several weeks that they, will fly in, they are concerned with the problems and issues in the work place and they will hold small group meetings with each and every department, they did and what happened was they fired nearly half they staff for letting the shop get to that point that we had to blog to get the company to listen us. My site still is up but the tone has changed a lot since it's early days. Here's a sample post from a fellow worker: It never seems to amaze me at the stupidity that our beloved XXXX-XXXXX staff comes up with. Once again we are facing lay offs full timers, but.................there are still temps running around the shop! The temps better begone before the full timers . There is plenty of inventory laying around why not shut-down for a week? Run with a skeleton volunteer crew, the rest of us welcome it! Next week the new turnstile will be in operation .............whoopie! The off shift girls feels completely safe from attack in the parking lot with the turnstile there. Just as the stupid signs on the locker room door have stopped the car break-ins, the turnstile is the best security for the people and property in the lot............

Blu Lunch, that is an absolutely brilliant idea. Never heard of such a thing before, but what a fantastic way to call attention. It is amazing how insulated some of the top management are from the issues that actually make the company run.

Great post!!!

Re: Really getting ticked at my employers.

I work in a similar kind of job work load.What we did was just stop working at the end of the day and went home.But we are union and it took just about every one to do it to make it work.Thay cant fire you for only working an 40 hour work week.I work about 50 hours a week an as most of the rest of the workers.The only time we go into 12 to 20 hour days is when we go to camp an want to go home.

It was alot of work, a little too much I ran by myself. At the height of it I was spending several hours a day replying and reporting and unscreening posts. But it worked, major changes came after several months with out threat of a union drive. I was never caught for running it or even suspected it...........

Re: Really getting ticked at my employers.

I am in similar situation. The way I handle it is the more they push, the bigger the project gets and the longer the time line is to completion. The more projects they want to try to "fit in" the longer the estimate for each of those "fit in" projects gets.

I no longer tell my management when a project is done ahead of time. I let it ride until its due.

If they don't like it they can always ship the work off to India, 12 hours off our schedule and you can't understand what they say. Management hates India. Board of Directors loves India, but does not have to talk to them. I love putting the squeeze on the VP.

In the mean while, the free time I do get, I work on those projects that I said would take 30 or 40% longer than I really think. That way, the job is getting done, and if there is a crisis, and something is needed, it is really already work in progress and they think its not even started. Again, you get the benefit of doing work in the free time you created by over-estimating.

Techinal people in should rule the world.

Re: Really getting ticked at my employers.

Well, the official weekend schedule was posted today.
I walked into 3 offices, one after the other,
Head of HR, production supervisor, 2nd production supervisor.

I gave each of them a piece of paper, stating that I was exercising my legal right to a day of rest, under Wisconsin State statute # 130.85. And that I would not be working more than 6 days in any week. Please be advised that any retaliation or reprimand regarding this, is illegal and will be forwarded to ...( WI Labor officials).

I left each office just as they read the letter and were starting to speak.

30 minutes later, my name was removed from the weekend schedule.

I followed the advice given to me by someone "in the know", what to write and what not to say.

It seems the company will follow the law, once put on notice.
But, for the other people that have not done this, the company takes the position that " they are working (x days in a row) voluntarily."

I punched in, went to work, set a production record with my crew, and was thanked for a fine job.

BTW, my crew made 76,687 pizzas in an 8 hour run, with only 3 minutes 48 seconds of down time.

***************************

As for all your advice above, thank you.
The union thing has been tried twice in the past, not wanted by enough workers. The threat of a union organizing drive will not phase them.
Outsourcing some production is not an option.

That's something you'd never want to say to me.................I'd maybe leave you one pizza as a thank-you! :D

Glad you got it sorted out Roscoe, good use of the law :)

Now, about shipping those pizzas you gave me? ;)
