Reality TV- waste of air time?

The advent of reality TV has caused this genre to explode into areas I never thought I'd see on TV. From Survivor (one of the first) to such silliness now as home buying, pawn shops and the like. One channel comes up with a "new" area to film in and all the other stations run to get something similar. Car restoration shows, auction guys, cooking shows. These are all IMHO mundane topics that don't rate airtime. Shows that bring us things we don't nornmally see are the exception for me. They can be interesting and even educational to some extent. But seriously- shows on reposessions? Do I need to see a show about somebody losing their car? What next- foreclosure TV? Let's all watch and take pleasure in seeing some poor soul lose their house. Maybe somebody can create a show that brings us horrible tragedies and then makes a game show out of it. Is it just me? Or am I unlike everyone else who seem to enjoy seeing people under stress. I don't like watching anything in which I feel uncomfortable for the person, even in movies. And I really don't care to watch people trying to lowball other people out of their stuff in order to try to make big profits. Not that I have any issues with profits, but when you offer someone $100 for something that you KNOW is worth thousands just seems wrong to me. Just my feeling.

I think in the end it's much like slow traffic rubbernecking an accident ... folks want to look at the wreck.

I can't stand most reality shows, however from time to time one catches my interest just for a glimpse into a world that's not my own. Truly doesn't happen much though.

Reality shows are odd. In a way it's not all that different from the evening news. You sort of believe it but sometimes the truth is streatched to improve ratings. I watch the Discovery Channel a lot and it has become one of the premeir reality show channels. About the only real "Discovery" program on it is Myth Busters, which I tend to believe is pretty good at sorting out fact from fiction. Often it's just who really cares kind of stuff but then sometimes it's pretty cool. As for Deadliest Catch... it's run its course, too much drama and almost feels like a soap now. Son's of Gun's is fun to watch but goofy as all get out. I'd probably buy a gun from Will. The Auction and the Car Lot guys pretty much suck at even being stupid. I have a hard time watching those two. I'd rather watch Antique Road Show but it's not on that channel.

All that reality tv surge started when the writer strike was going on. They saw they didn't need the writers to make tv and now we can't get much BUT reality shows. There are a few good shows out there. I really like Burn Notice on USA and if y'all haven't saw it...... ARCHER!!!! its awesome!!!!

That so-called "reality" stuff is only annoying if you watch it.

Most of us watch and enjoy a few shows and grumble self righteously about the others. :)

TV, is really just mindless entertainment and diversion.

It does the thinking for us - we just heave to decide, wether we want to absorb the content, or not.

I watch less than 15 min of tv per week (no subscription TV), but If I'm somewhere and have a channel remote in my hand, with 270 channels to choose from, then I'm a TV madman. ;)

I refer to the TV as 'The Great Demotivator'

If there's one around, and it's on, I get sucked in like a tractor beam, and I hate that.

So, I don't own one, although after 18 months in the last 36 of houseboat ownership, I've decided that a portable DVD player wouldn't be too bad for rainy days on the boat. That's as far as I'll give in.

In the winter months when i rent from a friend, I'll watch an hr or so on his TV when I get out of work. Not much else to do, I get out usually between 2-4am and I need to unwind before Im ready to sleep. Not usually the reality TV stuff though. Calling it that is deceiving, as it couldn't be much further from real...

I know, it is so scripted its crazy. I won't lie, I'm a tech freak so i have to have tv's. i got a 55" LG and i use it to play xbox/PS3/ and Wii. You guys have no clue how fun it is on XBOX 360 to have the Kinect sensor and play, lets say..... Volleyball, table tennis, football, EVERYTHING! Without a controller at all. Its great for a few friends over. Check it out if ya don't have one. Buy honestly, most the time I get em started on the game and I go not and work on the boat! lol
