I just purchased a boat and the trailer wheels are pretty loud. I jacked it up to check things out- the wheels are solid- no play when i wiggle them- if i give them even a little spin they seem to turn forever on their own- but as the wheels spin they are pretty loud- I popped off the cap and it was filled with grease- should i investigate further or am I ok?

Pull the bearings and look at them. Clean the bearings in solvent and repack if they are not pitted. They should not be making any noise.

Also, replace the rear seal as you will damage it removing it to get the inner bearing out.

if there is any question at all in a bearing I replace them, for how inexpensive they are its worth it just for the peice of mind. Loosing a bearing going down the highway is a good way to ruin a day that was supposed to be spent burning gas on the lake...

What Indy said. It is too easy and too inexpensive to prevent a bearing failure than to accept any risk at all.
