This may be common knowledge, but I found a "tank" that works perfectly for shadetree mechanic stuff for bigger outboards. Rubbermaid makes a 100-gallon trough (model 4242) that's big, deep and strong, but not too heavy to carry. It buries the lower unit on my 175 all the way up to the bottom of the steering tube. That introduces the back pressure and cooling volume you need to get "real world" running characteristics that you can't on muffs.
Was finally able to really set up my idle timing and speed in the driveway. It's also big enough that you can shift the motor without immediately losing all the water in the tank. I plumbed mine with a shut-off valve and garden hose so I can drain it out to the street.
I bought from this place, and they shipped it free to a participating hardware store in my area. No shipping charges, no sales tax, and it all went off without a hitch. Took about a week.
