Re-striping a Four Winns Horizon...

I have an '85 Four Winns 170 Horizon, the hull of which I recently buffed out to remove the oxidation/discoloration. It came out decently, and now my eyes immediately jump to the banged-up/scraped-up striping across the waterline.

I'm sure that a number of you have replaced striping on an old boat. I've looked for threads on this, but I'm not satisfied with what I've found. Therefore:

1. How to best remove the old stuff?
2. Where to get new stuff - not necessarily OEM colors...?
3. Has anyone a comment on using automotive striping at the waterline?

Thanks guys.

I just restriped my 1992 Rinker Captiva. I used automotive paint pre-cleaner-wax & grease remover available at autobody paint and supply stores. It works great for removing old pinstripe glue and should be used before applying new tape. I bought my striping tape from stripeman.com, they have great selection of styles and colors. Lots of picking with fingernails to get the old stuff off.

My roommate works at an auto body place and he and I have been looking at removing the stripes on my boat, he mentioned that his shop uses some kind of tool that is like a big eraser that they use to buff them off. He says is works extremely well and is very fast. He's out of town but I'll find out what it is when he gets back. :)

vanashke001 - That would be VERY helpful if you can find out what it is.

Yes most auto body stores and even amazon carries a pin stripe eraser google that phrase

It is a vinyl wheel that goes on an electric drill and eats the pin stripe and not the finish under it.

Redid my stripes two years ago. I peeled the edge back and just kept going. A pressure washer will also remove them. You can clean the glue off with acetone. $3.00 at Home depot. I got my stripes (3M) from a store that deals in auto paints and supplies. Wipe the area with alcohol and then apply your stripes.
