Howdy!

So I just picked up this 22' Islander and have been doing a bunch of reading/researching and thinking about how I'd like to power it.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=369247

While I am still weighing out the I/O option...

Lets just say, for the sake of argument, that I did close up the transom and go the outboard route, likely on a bracket.

Here is what is going through the noodle ...

I am thinking that 100 hp isn't going to cut the mustard and 200 hp is more than I need. I am not looking for a speed boat here. I am thinking that 150 hp might be the sweet spot.

I am thinking Merc/Johnson/Evinrude.

I am thinking that I don't, and won't, have the cash laying around for a newer beauty, though I can dream. I am on a budget here so it will need to be something older.

I am seeing 115 hp motors out there in my price range, but will they push this boat comfortably?

Any recommendations out there??

Any models I should definitely avoid?

Thanks!!

I/O to outboard conversions have been done many times, but the results are usually not good. it throws the center of gravity of the hull design off.

Yah, I have read that some. I am thinking this is a reasonable option as I think it's pretty much the same hull that they make today and they now offer an outboard bracket option, eh!

Cheers!

Yeah I hate to disagree with TD on this one but I've seen both the hull types on the big Starcrafts and they are basically the same. For that 22' I'd be leaning closer to the 200 than the 150. Gary_H_NC on here has a sweet Johnson 175 that would be awesome.

Jas, how heavy is the hull? My 20ft TABS weighs 830kg or 1865lbs bare, and a 115 4-stroke Yamaha with a 17 inch pitch K-series prop pushes it to 35 knots (40mph) with a good enough holeshot to easily pull out a slalom skier. She is also very economical averaging around 4 mpg. Having said that, I wish I'd bitten the bullet and budget a few K's more for the 150! Something to consider...

I am thinking that she is only about 1500 lbs. including the I/O that is in there now.

I think 40 mph would be plenty for me, she just needs to move along comfortably with just a bit left for fun. I really don't want the motor to be laboring just to get on plane. You know, not too little and not too big. Just right, eh!

Looks like EZ is trying to talk me into something bigger. Come on man!

Well I'm going to have much better info for you but you're going to have to wait till Spring. My buddy bought that 21' Cheiftain with a 90HP Johnson. I think it will be a turd. We shall see. Then I'll let know what you need on yours. I think your boat weighs in at closer to 2k with the I/O motor.

EZ, I checked here for the weight:

http://www.iboats.com/Starcraft_Marine__Islander_22__1976/bp/64b86549r2

Do they not include the I/O in that weight? My common sense tells me that it's closer to the 2000 lb mark, but I was quoting those stats, eh??

90 hp - I agree with you, might be a bit of a turd.

Cheers!

Lots of trolling! :D

No seriously, the Yamaha F115 comes with the command link gauges which give me fuel figures, distnace to empty, average speed, average consumption etc. When trolling I average 5.3mpg and at 3800 rpm about 4.9mpg. So I try to cruise around at 3800rpm and even when pulling the kids on the tube or skis the thing still does better than 1mpg. However, the kids only visit occasionally nowadays so we don't do as much tubing as we used to! :D
