re: KROSEMOND - leaking oil

I'd really like to know how you made out with your problem of oil leaking from beneath the cowl and down the shaft. I have a 1983 Johnson 150 that just started the EXACT same problem after the dealer did some "carburetor work" during commissioning. Another mechanic told me that it is a worn or squished "base gasket" that is leaking, but your thread sounded so similar to my situation. My motor is running great so it's hard to believe that all 6 cyl. may not be firing. But if you say so.. I hope that you got your problem solved and can maybe help me out. Thanks.

Re: re: KROSEMOND - leaking oil

Hey Bob,

I did have 1 cylinder that wasn't firing, and I got that worked out and the boat is running great. All six are definately firing. But I still get a minor amount of black, thick oil running out of the cowling. I wiped it off before running the boat at the lake for about 3 hours the other day, and when I loaded her back up, there was no oil. Then it appeared the next day sitting in the driveway. It is very thick and has no smell of gas, so I assumed that it is not fuel related. I did spray some penetrating oil inside the cowling, so I just guessed it was that slowly making it's way out. Now you make me want to investigate further. But she is running so well!!

Sorry not to be of help, but maybe we can figure this out together.

Ken

Bob,

After re-reading your post, I had one more thought. What would a "base gasket" be designed to keep in? It is a 2 cycle engine, there is no crankcase!! You get what I am saying?

I thought my engine ran pretty good when it was running on 5 cylinders. I didn't even know. But she does run much better since I got that worked out. And the oil dripping is much less now.

Re: re: KROSEMOND - leaking oil

This "base gasket" theory came from the on-line service "MASTERTECH" who I paid $20. to diagnose my problem online. He sounds so positive about it. His e-mail says that during the 80's the EPA started to restrict asbestos compounds used in gasket materials and that the "base gaskets in the 150's during that period were effected. The exhaust gaskets on the 150's are OK, no worries there". "An improved base gasket is now available of a reinforced material like the head gaskets that eliminates this problem. Should be able to install this in about 1 chargeable hours time". Make any sense? This is from him..not me. I'm going to check my cylinder's today. Thanks very much for getting back to me. I'll keep you informed. Bob

oops.. One more thing Krosemond. I also asked him if this needs to be done right away and he replied. "Probably be just fine. The inner rib blows out so exhaust excapes along with oil. I would remove the fairing over those bolts and tighten them up though"

Re: re: KROSEMOND - leaking oil

Bob,

It is starting to make a little sense. So it is a gasket that is between the engine and the shaft exhaust? But why did I not get the drip right after running it, and then it showed up the next day after sitting 24 hours? Did you say that he said it would be fine, or it needed to be done right away? I am planning to go to the coast (on sunday) for a week and will be running the boat 4-8 hours a day.
I will watch it carefully and report back.

I still do not understand WHAT the oil is. Is it unburnt gas and 2 cycle oil with some carbon mixed in?

Thanks

Re: re: KROSEMOND - leaking oil

He said that it would not cause any harm if I waited until the end of the season after haulout. He did say that the bolts should be tightend though, and it may make idle a bit rough. As to the time frame..my dealer ran the engines for quite awhile and no sign of oil, I drove the boat 1/2 hour home and no oil. Later in day...oil dripping down shaft, Also...small oil puddles inside cowl. Will let you know after I check cylinders.

Re: re: KROSEMOND - leaking oil

Tonight when I get home, I will look more closely at the bottom of the cowling for oil puddles. I am still confused about what it is and where it comes from. Is it just unburned 2 cycle oil that builds up on the inside of the exhaust system walls? Does it drip after the engine is stopped because it gets blown out the exhaust port when the engine is running? If it is leaking down the shaft because of a bad gasket, then is it suppose to come out of the exhaust? Yikes, that can't be good for the environment!!

It is little more than a nuisance for me, the streak is usually about 1/2" wide and 6" long when it stops and doesn't grow anymore. I just wipe it off with a paper towel before going back in the water. But it was way worse when I was only hitting on 5 cylinders.
Must be unburnt gas and oil.
