Re: idle Force 120

this is my first time on a marine forum so please excuse me going over what must be old ground for you all.
i need some help to bring a 1992 Force 120 back to life.
The previous owner tells me the motor has been idle for 12-18 months with a bad stator. other than a damaged skeg the motor looks clean and in great shape.
if possible i would like someone to post a service hit list for me to address before putting fuel and spark to the beast.

scanning this website i realise that i need to drain the lower unit, replace water pump and refill L-unit.
i know i have a stator to replace.
I was also planning to clean or replace the following items as required:
- fuel lines
- fuel tank
- carbs
all electrical connections to be cleaned.
what else should be addressed for regular maintenance?
any advise can be redeemed for beer in Austin TX!!

I would test or have the compression tested first. If that motor has one or more bad cylinders you may not want to go any further. Compression testers can be bought for around 30 bucks. Make sure spark plugs are all out, grounded and hooked up to the wires when testing. Post results here when you have them.

Other things to add to your list is rebuild fuel pump. Remove float bowls and see if any gas is still in there. If so get rid of it and plan on rebuilding the carbs. If compression tests show good buy one of these
FORCE MANUAL

I live in austin tx myself-- Go to harbor freight tools (one on s lamar and one up north by fry's) for the compression tester -- 10$ and it's actually good quality- If everything works out and it runs, I would replace the gear oil again after the first time out just for good measure-- Also before you crank it wouldn't hurt to shoot a little wd40 in the spark plug holes to lubricate the rings-

also de-carb the cylinders. Your Merc dealer sells this product. Follow the instructions to the letter, it's a miracle in an aerosal spray can!. My engine sat for a year plus also.

Re: idle Force 120

thanks gents,
since my last post i have checked the compresion @ 140psi on all 4 cyls.
last night i replaced the water pump. (very glad i did it was trashed)
i picked up the gear pullers from harbor frieght today and the flywheel popped right off so that i can confirm the stator part number. NB: there seems to be a lot of stator options for the force range (9-24A). Anyhoo - i have the OEM part number as 398-8778A24 and crossed that to CDI # 174-8778K1. the cheapest i have found is at eDrive power for $140.95.
before i get back to the motor i need to replace the trim motor as the darn thing gave up the ghost on Sunday in the up position.
i'll post again once i have the trim operational and the stator installed.
many thanks to all those who helped.
es

Are you sure the trim motor is bad?
Maybe the relay that controls the "down" is bad.
Try swopping the relays and see if it will go down.

Re: idle Force 120

i took the trim motor apart over the weekend - it has a burnt winding with a large visible brake in the copper.
the front o-ring seal had gone bad in the motor/pump assembly flooding the motor housing with hydralic oil.
i should collect a new motor today for $50.00 and will post a follow-up
cheers
es
