Re: Cooling of the motor

How does the water cirrculate inside the motor. Is there a suction valve exposed to the outside of the boat,That I could use to test my motor not being in the water?

Thanks Guys.

Re: Cooling of the motor

There should be a horizontal plate on your lower unit just above the propeller. This is called the cavitation plate. Near this you should see a vent or some holes. This is where the water is picked up. You can purchase a pair of "earmuffs" that attach to a garden hose at your local boat or auto parts store, or just submerge the lower unit in a garbage can or barrel full of water. Your motor may have a "tell-tale" that emits a small stream of water when the motor is running, or it may just spray from the exhuast. What year/make/model is your outboard?

Re: Cooling of the motor

the trim & tilt problem could be the solenoids. they usually bolt to the left side of the engine. have someone hit the buttons while u listen to hear if they click or not. u may have to replace them. is this the 800 series cobra? if so it's a whole new ballgame back there. i'm not sure when omc redesigned their drive. the speedo could be the pitit tube is clogged. the pitit is the piece, usually plastic, that mounts on the transom. remove both ends of the tube & blow TOWARDS the pitit to see if it's clogged. hope that works for u.

I suppose it's possible the trim controls are hooked only to the dash, and not the shifter. As for the speedo, you may have a plastic "fin" on the transom that sits in the water while the boat is underway. See if the hole in the bottom of the fin is plugged, and try blowing through the small tube that is connected to the fin and have a helper see if the speedo moves. They generally use air pressure to operate the needle in the gauge. These are very vague ramblings and may not apply to your rig, since I can only imagine what you have and how it's put together. But hope it helps!
