getting ready to rebunk my trailer and it currently has stationary bunks or either they are too rusty to swivel which ever.. but what is the advantages of swivel and stationary? boat is a 19 ft chapparal bow rider with 90 hp outboard. trailer is a galvanized road runner with center rollers which boat never touches and carpeted 2x4 bunks 2 main bunks 12 ft long with two 4 ft outter bunks under the back of the boat. and 2 12 ft bunks mounted to the frame just outside the center rollers with no risers.. the boat never touches these either. so whats the purpose of these lower bunks? the boat sits a few inches above these bunks?

Not sure about your trailer as mine is all roller, but try posting a pic or two of what you have. Guys love pics around here and they usually get fairly quick responses. Good luck!

Bunks that tilt will fit flat against the hull.
Stationary bunks had better fit the hull when mounted, cause they won't move.

The bunks that don't touch the trailer have no purpose.

Sounds like your trailer was originally for a different boat, and doesn't fit your boat very well at all.

swivel bunks are just bunks that have the bottom bolt loose. There is no purpose for them, once the boat is on the trailer, loosen the bolt enough for the bunk to lay perfectly flat against the boat, then tighten it back up. It isn't like your hull is changing shape!

And I agree, sounds like the trailer needs some help as far as setup. Pics!!

i bought it from the original owner and supposedly that was the trailer that came with the boat new. but the trailer is an 80 and the boat an 81 so i guess it could go either way.. but i wasnt sure if the bottom bunks maybe guided the bow of the boat until the wider hull hit the bunks. new to boats so i am assuming anything at this point..

So rollers don't touch, bunks don't all touch. I agree that pictures with the boat on the trailer would help explain what's going on with it.

By no means a bunk expert here because I don't use them but my best guess is that those green bunks can go bye-bye. They are doing nothing. The roller that I can see looks as if it is just there to protect and guide the boat into the bunks as there does not look to be any adjustment to them. Otherwise looks OK to me.

the trailer has those rollers all the way up the center like that, and with the exception of the rear roller they all have height adjustments but are currently all down.. i was told by my Father in law that you dont want the rollers to touch the boat because they will put a hook in the hull... and that it only needs to sit on the bunks or "board thingies" as he called them... he isnt new to boating but he is one of those that runs a boat till it wont go anymore and either replace it or go boatless until he finds another beater of a boat... he also said my 90 hp should run 50-60 mph also lmao i thought 30-35 was pretty good for that 90 pushing that beast...

If it has adjustable rollers the length of the trailer then I would adjust them all up. Not so far as they would be lifting the boat but far enough that they are making firm contact! It will add more support and stability to the whole rig.

The main purpose of the center rollers is to catch the deep-V keel as it is loading and center it, then let the hull land gently on the bunks as the deep-V has "cleared". They would not touch the hull once the boat is all the way forward on the bunks and against the bow stop.

Sorry but I have to disagree. If there were only one or two rollers at the end of the trailer I would agree. He says the trailer has them the entire length therefore they should provide some support. I see many multiple bunk trailers that also have zero rollers.

i will adjust these up to put firm pressure on the boat but not take pressure off of the bunks

Re: re bunking my trailer stationary vs swivel bunks

Trailers for Vee boats need rollers at each crossmember for protection so the Vee can't ever hit metal. Which roller gets tagged first depends on how deep the trailer is when retrieving. The Vee on mine hits the 4th and 5th rollers (out of 5), never touches the first two, sometimes starts on the 3rd if I am shallow. The rollers center it as it moves forward then as it slides up onto the bunks they finish centering it, at that point the rollers are relieved of duty.

this makes sense. main reason i am rebunking is because the front is not quiet centered on the front support rubber v it is about one inch off center and hoping to adjust this by making sure new bunks are straight and properly aligned.. have to cut old u bolts off as rust has eaten at them plenty. so may as well replace bunks while doing this task they are worn anyway.. ordering proper bunk carpet to replace the astro turf type on them now, and using cypress 2x4's to make the bunk boards.. galvanized u bolts and anything else yall suggest??? carriage heads thru bunks under carpet countersunk or go back with lag bolts from underneath?

Again I see many very large V hulls that are on bunk trailers that have no rollers at all. How would you answer that?
