Hi All,

95 Lund Tyee 1850, 4.3 HO, DP-C Drive. So I've had this boat for going on 3 years, so far everything works just fine BUT, there are things that look as if they have been added or changed on the cooling system. It just doesn't look "factory" to me.
The boat has a closed cooling system, works great, no issues. But there are cheap looking plastic elbow fittings, LOTS of hose clamps, the plastic cover that goes over the flame arrester that says Volvo 4.3 GS , , the mounting hole has moved over a few inches for what looks like an accomodation for the coolant tank.

The question is, could this boat have been purchased new with a raw water cooling system and been converted to a closed cooling system? Can a closed cooling system be added with out making mods to the engine itself, aside from the thermostat and houseing?
This boat is fresh water boat, no salt water in Minnesota, why would someone convert this to a closed system, , what is the bennefit of a closed cooling system over a raw water system aside from the engine running a bit warmer on a closed system?

Lastly, is there a way I could find out exactly how the boat was built, what options etc? Do manufacturers keep records back to 95?

Sorry about all the questions, thanks a bunch for your answers.

Sure, there are several companies making closed cooling system kits.

why would someone convert this to a closed system,

Hard to say, you would have to ask the guy that converted it. Lots of un-explainable things have been done to boats by their owners.

Call Lund and ask them.

Re: Raw Water to Closed Cooling Conversion

Thanks Don,

The heat exchanger appears to be a stock Volvo/Mercruiser item. Like I say though some of the plastic fittings seem kind of cobbed up. I do plan on changing those to something "better".

Is there a bennefit to having a closed cooling system over a raw water system?
