Raw Water Pump - Pulley Press

Need to install the serpentine pulley on a raw water pump for a 2003 5.7 freshwater cooled, closed system. I know there are some areas that need to be addressed - the Mercruiser shop manual seems to always be void of these types of important specifics.

A few questions -
  • what is the best process for a DIY'er to do this properly ? It must be done with consideration that the SS shaft, where the impeller installs, and is not flush with the housing - does not get pressed without support. So, when pressing, care must be taken to not press and wreck where the bearings sit.
  • the measurement between the pump housing and pulley must so the serpentine belt lines up perfectly.
  • What is that spec ?
If this is something I should have done, let me know that too.

Thanks.

You use a GM power steering puller/installer when changing pullys

Aaah - yes, the right tool. Looked it up online - makes sense how it works.

Is there a spec for how far you need to install pulley in order for it to line up properly with other pulleys and serpentine belt ?

never checked, just installed until you felt a stop I believe the shaft is just under the pully lip when tightened

The reason I ask about the spec is I once had a friend install the pulley for me and I forget if it was too far in or not enough, but it ‘warn’t’ good... the serpentine belt was off-center as it relates to the pulley.

I had to pull the :censored: pump back out to fix - taking the pump out in an i/o is not fun ! At all ! Terrible location to work on.

Gotta be a spec or a way to measure...

Thx Rick - I'm rebuilding the raw water pump. It's got a pulley that can get pressed on and off. When pressing the pulley back on, there's the potential for it to not align up with the other pulleys that the serpentine belt lines up with ( I speak from experience ! ).

So, I want a process or way to measure that assures I do it right - once.

Wondering if I should install the pulley 1/2 way, install the raw water pump, then measure the center line of the engines main water pump pulley - then, drive the pulley to meet that measurement ? Sounds like a PITA ! Gotta be a better way.

Grabbed this online. This topic is an issue or you can shred belts, or a perpetual low RPM squeak. Seems like it's hard to adjust for when not installed.

Measure where its at on the shaft now. Then install it to the same spec.

Totally appreciate the response ! I watched that anyway and learned something new.
