I read somewhere that a (big block) engine with a raw water pump mounted fuel pump, requires oil internally before mounting.
Can anyone elaborate and or expand on this?

Thanks all!
Happy 4th!!!

Sure, it would be good to know the serial number of the engine, etc. I have 2 of those engines and the fuel pump went bad on one of them. So, I got to take it apart and replace it.

there is a cam in an oil well on the water pump piece that operates the fuel pump that is mounted to it. As I recall it is gear oil that you put in there.

Re: Raw water pump mounted fuel pump oil?

The gear lube in the pump should always be replaced yearly, and they will always smell like gas and be slightly diluted.
Every mechanical pump will allow a small amount of gas into the oil. On automotive, the pump was mounted to the block, and the few drops of oil went into the 5-7 quarts of oil where it evaporated and burned off at the temps the oil runs. But not on that sorry setup Merc came up with. If allowed to go too long the gas dilutes the oil and the bearing on the pump cam tends to score and cause problems.
And yes, it takes gear lube. Hi Performance gear lube is what is called for.
