I bought a 94 Searay Express with a 5.7L last August. It started overheating this week because the impeller was bad. While replacing the impeller, I noticed the bracket that supports the pump from the opposite side of the engine was not connected to the engine frame, but just hanging there. The pump assembly has two bolts on top that hold it in place and the adjusting bracket on the bottom. The bracket goes under the flywheel and is supposed to be attached to the engine on the port side. I figured out where the bracket was supposed to connect, got the correct machine bolt to hook it up and then the frustration started. At first i thought the previous owner had just forgot to connect it(some mechanic!)
When I conneted the bracket, the belt was too tight. The adjusting bracket hits up against the pump assembly and will not allow the pump to be moved toward the flywheel. After about 3 hrs of frustration and many four letter words, I came to the conclusion that either the bracket is bent or the belt is not the right one. So I removed the bracket adjusted the tension and now the pump is held only by the two top bolts. It works fine, but I don't feel comfortable with it that way.
Is there a chart for determining the correct belt? I think a belt that is about 1/2-1" bigger will work.
Thanks,
Jerry
