I got a 2 stroke Johnson 150 hp 2001 (j150vlsif).
About 3 weeks ago I went out with my wife for a ride, I've never done this but this time I over push the motor to higher rpms (4500-6000).
While cruising this rattling noise came up, sounded like a rhythmic thin metal, never heard that before. I stopped right of way and check the motor. There was nothing there to see, hear or smell, the noise went away.
Slowly I start increasing the rpms and the noise came back.
I took the boat back to the boat ramp in idle speed and the noise sometimes came back. It lose some what some power as well. No check engine neither hot engine light came on, nothing.
Back in my house while flushing the motor I increased the rpms to see if there was any noise and there was nothing. Is a 2 stroke so it's kinda loud to hear it anyways.
I took my time looking around the motor and again, nothing was there to see, hear or smell.
After meeting and talking with some mechanics, they told me is the lower unit, motor needs to be rebuild, this...that....you guys know. Some of them told me that they would first need to:
Change the air and fuel hoses
Rebuild all the carbs.
Inspect and clean the reed valves.
Inspect and get new gaskets for the intake manifold.
Inspect, clean and place liquid gasket in the cylinder head, new spark plugs.
Inspect the lower unit.
Change the water pump and seals.
Change all the seals in the lower unit.
Inspect the lower unit gearcase and seals.

So i order the service manual and all the above, I did it myself.
ITS DONE.

Personally I thought that the gears were done, because there was water in the lower unit.
After seeing and removing the gears and dog clutch, these are in perfect condition.
All the seals , water pump and gear oil was replaced in the lower unit.
After all the above was done (3 weeks after) I put the boat back on the water with my fingers crossed, and there was the sound again, very fine and quiet like before. No difference with the performance, no yet until I increased the rpms and load. The noise came back very loud, is not an stable noise, it comes and goes. It's a metal, thin rattling noise. Hard to explain the noise.
Some mechanics told me " run that son of the b, fast as you can". But I think that they just want some work for them after the boat gets worse doing that.
I'm really going crazy with this, I need to know what else I can do or inspect.
Can be something by the flywheel, I don't wanna mess with that if I don't have to because I don't know how to fix the timing, In the case I messed up.
Can be by the power pack? Just don't know !
I'M ASKING FOR YOUR HELP HERE, I REALLY NEED TO GET THIS FIXED, I DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO, IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY, AND I'M TIRED OF SPENDING MORE MONEY IN THE WRONG PARTS, I just got this boat too about 7-8 months ago and it was running fine prior this.

Notes: While inspecting the reed valves, I got some access to the pistons, the look good from that angle but some of them (2) got a little play, in other words the are a little lose. But if that is the problem, wouldn't the noise be constant, no intermitent?
Please help!

Did compression test and they were:
105-100
90-90
80-90

Also I removed all the spark plugs cover very slowly and you can see a spark as soon you remove it in every spark plug , meaning that the pistons are working good.

I REALLY THANK YOU GUYS AND APPRECIATE YOUR HELP AND INPUT IN ADVANCE!!

Have you looked inside the sparkplug holes, see if you can see any dings on the top of the pistons from something being sucked in there.
If you can rebuild a lower unit doing work to the powerhead wont cause you much more effort

Yes, I did remove the cylinder head, no damage to the pistons or head.all the spark plugs look the same. Changed them with new ones.
The reed valves were a little dirty but was not stuck or broken.
Thanks for your reply bosunsmate.
What else can be, bearings?

I too spend 99% of my time online via an android phone.

If you have questions about how to access features or perform certain tasks @ this forum, feel free to PrivateMessage (PM) me or any other Mod anytime. PMs are accessed from the Messages link at the far top right of any forum page, just to the left of your user name.

Just a suggestion, but, some of the most experienced motor mechanic members may not have access to good connections or videos, so post as much relevant info you can as text along w videos, but try to be concise. I'd bet some got lost trying to read your lengthy 1st post and didnt watch the videos.

Maybe someone can confirm...But I think a difference between 80 and 105 psi is not good news. I am wondering if your rings are worn bad enough your getting unburnt fuel through those cylinders and its igniting / small backfires? (just a guess..not sure how to test that)

Rattling noise coming from my 85' 90hp Evinrude V4 almost drove me crazy! Mine was the starter gear remaining up on the flywheel.....took a burned up starter to find the solution.
