boat listed below. was all set to go out this weekend. started'er up on the hose prior to going out. at about 1000rpm i start to get a rattle or klunking sound from the drive. in Neutral, drive down and steering straight. if i increase rpm's the noise increases with it and gets more pronounced. i didn't try fwd or rev. didn't trim it, and didn't turn the drive.
i havn't done much to find out about it yet. i did drain the lub out of the lower unit. it isn't to old, only a few hours of use. lub came out kinda streaky looking, blackish brown with brown streaks. not really milky. no metal that i could feel. was feeling the lub as it came out many times till it was empty.
i put a speedy sleeve on my lower drive shaft a bit ago. was thinking it may have let go. did a pressure test to 10psi and it held for 10 or 15 min. did vac. test. held at 5.5 hg for 10 or 15 min. i'm thinking that rules out the speedy sleeve and lower seal on the upper. or am i thinking wrong about that notion?
i don't think i should use it till i find the rattle or else i will surely find the rattle then. catastrophicly.
what else should i test prior to removeing the drive?
the noise seems to be comeing from the upper drive shaft houseing. not the lower. used a hearing hose to decide that. the noise is worse about in line with where i put the speedy sleeve at. level with the lower drive shaft seal on the upper.
what should i be checking next?
one last note. had an alledged welder "try" to tig weld my ventilation plate last week. had a broken piece out of it from a stingray type fin. any chance the heat from the tig welding attempt damaged something? if i ever get this drive right i think the stingray type fin is history.

Could be ujoints or gimbal bearing. Pull the drive and check for roughness.
