I've got a 1979 Evinrude,.55HP....it has two problems,...1, it all of a sudden started making a ratteling noise under power?? I think this may be a bearing?? but don''t know where to look for one???#2, the power trim,...it has 2 rams, the one next to the pump seems to work fine,...the other one doesn't go up at all?..but worst of all, it won't go all the way down?,and fights against the "good one" the last 3 or 4" to let it go down all the way?????.....I have the service manual but it doesn't explain about the power trim & tilt???I suer hope some noe out there can help me....Thanks for any help you can give..Alex

Cruncher....have you checked the TNT fluid level in the reservoir lately? If it's good, chances are ya' got a plugged in one of the trim lines. May need a flushing. I got the same TNT unit on my 84' 50hp Johnny.

Don't know about the rattle....they can be a killer to find. What ya' might do is get a short stick to use as a sounding rod. A metal rod works better. While the engine is running, put one end of the sounding rod to various places on the block and see if you can pinpoint the source o the rattle.

Cruncher,
I had a rattle that was driving me crazy. I thought a rod was going bad or something like that.
It turned out to be a latch on the engine cover was rattleing. A piece of folded paper between the latch and engine housing stopped the noise.
Yes, I did tighten the latch but it still rattled under power, sounding like internal engine trouble.

Cruncher.....There is a way to fill and vent the system that you need to follow.

Raise the engine all the way UP. Check the reservoir level and top off if needed. Cycle the engine up and down 4 to 5 times and leave it up and recheck the level. Do this until the level stays the same. Correct level is at the bottom of the reservoir fill plug hole.

Cycling the engine up and down purges the system of air that is released when the plug hole is opened.
