Dammit! I just "acquired" another boat -- dual axle no name trailer, but nice heavy duty frame with very little rust. Problem: Guy who towed it to me didn't air-up the tires and didn't know he had a flat. Tore one tire to shreds. P155-13 auto tires on 4 lug front wheel drive rims. Regular trailer rims won't fit under the fenders so I have to change the tire instead of putting on a spare that I have. No bearing buddies so I also have to repack all the bearings just to move it to a storage location 20 miles away. And it's going to rain tomorrow. And Christmas is coming.

I'll take some cheese with my whine.

1985 Glastron SX 180. 3800 180 HP engine, Old style obsolete Merc outdrive I forget the name--gear tilt. Rough interior.

AND---A story. Seems like it was owned by a father

102_6543.jpg102_6544.jpg102_6545.jpg102_6546.jpg

and son. They had an argument and son wanted to sell the boat. Father said " You sell your half" and took a chain saw to it. Professionally repaired but---

You can see the shredded tire and the patches in the first two photos.

Re: Rant!

I don't know what strikes me as more strange: the fact that they actually cut it in half or that it was repaired afterwords!

That engine hasn't run for a considerable amount of time. But the chain saw massacre aside, WT heck are you gonna do with the boat and trailer? Keep or turn em? I like the boats lines and I bet it was a doll a few years ago, maybe with some love/money it could be again. Best of luck with it.

Re: Rant!

I'm trying to sell her for anything--the CL ad read "Make me a lowball offer I can't refuse." Yes, it is an OMC painted black and the tilt pinion is missing but the guys on the I/O forum tell me I can still get one for around 25 bucks.
The engine is a GM 3800--used in Buicks and other Gm cars.
Right now, there is no room for the boat at my house, the weather did not cooperate (6 inches gooey white stuff) so I could not get her to a storage location and I am seriously contemplating paying the fee for dumping the hull at the landfill. Then, since aside from the shredded tire and goofy wheels the trailer is in good shape, I was intending to keep the trailer and refurbish it.

Re: Rant!

There should be some valuable motor and drive parts there. Part it out!

Re: Rant!

Well, it goes without saying that I will salvage the windshield, control box, engine, and outdrive before I have it crushed. Besides, why pay extra money to throw out parts that can be sold?

Re: Rant!

Its a chevy 3.8, not the buick 3.8 (later 3800)...

Basically the same as a 4.3. Just for when you sell the parts...

Re: Rant!

Well, That's it! Yesterday I stripped off the steering, windshield, instrument panel, and all exterior aluminum. Today I will remove the outdrive and tomorrow the engine. After I drain and remove the fuel tank the hull will become a dumpster for home renovation projects before it gets crushed at the landfill.

HOWEVER: The trailer is in relatively good condition with a few minor exceptions. The center roller brackets were set too low and the center of the front axle touches them (at rest), wheels and tires need replacing, and some minor rust needs painting. The two roller bunks are too short (only about 3 feet) and I will replace them with a couple of roller bunks I have that are twice as long. Fenders are a bit bent and off, so i will remove and reset them. Photos to follow later.

Re: Rant!

Yep, thats a chevy 229 ci v6 and a OMC 800 leg, should have tried to fire up the motor while it was still in the boat.

Re: Rant!

Well, the boat is gone, but the trailer is in good shape--just a couple of rust spots where it looks like somthing was mounted and perforated then welded. Soon, my trusty 240 volt welder will come out of storage and do the job correctly. You can see--no other major rust on the frame. Springs are relatively new and bogeys between the axles are 1 1/2 inches thick --three 1/2 inch plates stacked and welded.

BTW: P.O said the last time used, the engine overheated. Well, It was last used three years ago and after I pulled it I discovered that the freeze plugs were rusted out--that'l do it. Manifold connector hoses were broken too and drains were either seized shut or broken. The engine is not seized though. I could turn it with a breaker bar on the harmonic balancer nut.
