Okay here is the rant of the day.....

My son and his wife are buying their first home (only 3 miles from me which is a blessing) and they are in the finance process..... good so far.

Today my DIL receives a telephone call from AT&T and was told she owes $800 on an unpaid cell phone bill  My son and his wife DO NOT have cell phones!

They live in Vermont but the cell phone was in Watertown NY....... my son contacted AT&T and they (AT&T) are going to forward a packet of fraud info to be filled out and then AT&T will determine if there was fraud! All this MUST be accomplished within 21 days or AT&T will report this to the credit people.:mad:

My poor son and DIL are weeks away from their purchase and AT&T has the nerve to threaten? Well AT&T will NEVER see any business from me and have made it to the top of the GARBAGE pile for their methods of handling fraud. Threaten the victim?

I told my son to call the State Police and report the incident of identity theft not to mention a wrath of bad publicity they have earned.:mad::mad:

Companies should not mess with Veterans or their families.

Bob,

This happens all the time. It's not AT&T, it's SCUMBAGS that steal identities. Arizona is the ID theft capital of the world. Welcome to MY world.

AT&T will make it right-eventually. I won't make this out to not appear as a BIG DEAL, IT IS.

Identity theft is a bi*&&^% to overcome. Been there.

The Fed's have their "head in the sand" (being polite) regarding this issue. They've let MILLIONS of illegals into this country, needing ID's.

Bob,

Tell him to send a letter to them by Certified mail return receipt requested to verify the bill, I have had many contact me over the years, and never once have they been able to verify the bill and never once have they reported it to the credit agencies, don't let them walk on these kids, they need to be proactive.

Honestly, I can't tell you how many calls and letters I have received over the years, and not once have they been real and not once have they reported it to anyone!

This is bizzare. Recently I financed a truck and boat and shortly after started getting phone calls from some collection agency saying they were collecting for companies that I had never done busineess with. There's nothing on any of my credit reports about any of these debts so I know its a scam. They did a credit check on my Trans Union credit history. I'm waiting to see if they send me a notice as is required by law. If not, I'll call Trans Union and find out who they are and then sue them.

I actually think they got lucky. A lot of times places will send one letter and then go right for the credit.

A quick story when we were buying our home. My fiance had her credit get hit from an old school bill that she knew nothing about. They claimed to have sent a letter, but she never got one. Her credit score (luckily only one of the three and we caught it soon) dropped from a high 700, to a high 500 because she "missed" two $20 payments, on a $2000 bill. She called, and paid it, but the stress of us possibly losing out on getting our new home was tough. She got it paid, got a letter from the loan agency saying it was paid, and nothing negetive came from it. The sad thing is, she had to climb back from that credit ding, of which she knew nothing about until it was too late.

Does this thread not violate rule #4 of the Forum Rules or am I violating #10 by saying this? :)

First off, are you sure it was ATT?

Or did they just say they were ATT?
Did they return the call to the number given to them, or did they look up the ATT phone number and call it?

There are countless scams out there that target people that "need" to keep their credit score up for a pending loan.

Shortly after my wife inquired about financial aid/college loans online, she started receiving calls about an Att cell bill from 10 years previous. She was never an Att customer.

We figured out that the call was not coming from Att, but from a shady collection service, known for mailing and calling about bogus bills. Many of the calls go to people that are trying to get loans, they know you want your loan to go through, so they figure you will pay the "bill".

They even give you a website link to verify all info.
Of course, if you go to the link, they know they have hit a nerve, and figure they have your identity info correct. Then they ask you to verify with your choice of several pieces of info.

Hey Bob, what Roscoe said, or ... if, in fact, someone did fraudulantly use your son's ID to open an account and accrue an $800 bill, then AT&T must get to the bottom of it to find the culprit. The only person they KNOW is your son, from the info given to them. They have to start at verifying who your son is ... a victim, just like them, or the source of THEIR frustration. It has to start somewhere, and they really can't start anything till they verify that your son, as well as AT&T has been defrauded. Once they know that, then they can move on to finding the cause of their loss. It is only logical that it starts with your son. After all, how many deliquent accounts are called and the first thing out of the mouth of the person on the other end is, "It can't be me, I don't owe that. Someone must be using my account." If AT&T just said, "Okay, forget about it", how many unpaid accounts would there be?

Give AT&T a little credit and find out for sure which it is before being too hard on them.

You know...... the idiot played with the wrong people. We have identified him (also reported our find to AT&T ....we should get a reward for doing their work)and he is a worthless druggie. Police involvement starts tomorrow. Going to let the LEO's be the tough guys even though the word knee-capping comes to mind.

Yes it is AT&T since the customer service acknowledged it.

Using registered/certified mail has been passed along to my son.

Great, either the guy is real dumb, or you have super sleuth powers. Good luck getting the cops on his but.

Of course he has nothing to lose but his freedom, and they aren't likely to lock him up for this. But at least it should clear the kids of any wrong doing.

Way to go Bob! I've never been ripped off by identity theft, yet, give me a piece of wood! BUT, I know what it feels like to have a wallet stolen with pics of your kids ripped up, all the credit cards missing and cash gone. I've had druggies in my house when I was away on Block Island, RI for a weekend of blissful boating only to return to find my bed slept in and $15,000 of jewelry missing. My wife is done wanting jewelry. It cut pretty deep! She doesn't want to think, jewelry! A lot of history there; wedding rings, engangement rings, class rings, pearls....Police detectives found one piece we could ID [pawned not too far away. The druggie got $168 for a $2500 wedding ring. Talk about desperate for drugs! Filthy Mongrels! Rats! Scum bags! Vermin! It's rampant these days. I remember a time we left the cars and house unlocked. Now you need deadbolts, firewalls, alarm systems and motion sensors. Its drugs. It's out of control!
