So I get a letter from the postal service saying they are closing our local post office. (4 miles away) I didn't really like it, I tend to mail out large envelops with drawings, contracts, etc. (especially things that MUST have a real signature.) but Ok, I can live with it by driving to the next closest post office 17 miles away when I really have to send large pacakages out.

Yesterday I get another letter saying they are going to discontinue rural delivery for everyone in the area and I must now rent a PO box 17 miles away! Almost 35 miles everyday just to get my mail and of course the rental of the PO box. I call and ask if I can retain my existing mailing address and am told no, I have to use a PO box number. I explain how much of a problem that is because LOTS of companies refuse to send anything to a PO Box. (My credit card company won't allow the use of a PO Box. Niether will my cell phone company.) Reply, "Gee, that could be a problem, we don't have an answer".

GRRrrr.................

yep PO deliveres to all adresses, Public Service , Now just send via commerical carrier , Who's making what now ? Last things that I purchased on Intranet cost as much as shipping ? Worked as 89 day wonder 3-4 yrs
and not easy as we sorted by hand 5' of mail edge wise every hour and was checked . Nixy's and partial was ok saw alot of mags . Dam Christmas Time at the PO . Send the contents of your PO Box via commerical to your home every other day as your time and fuel is more valuable .

Feel your pain, as far as your credit cards, and other things won't take PO Box also put your physical address on the accounts.. The cost of our PO Box is free, What is pissy is when they told me that I live on the wrong side of the tracks to have a mail box in front of the house, they do it for the other side of town where the "GOOD" people live. Their words. I got pissed off and changed to lake house as resident town lost mony, and still have free PO Box in town but now look at them and tell them I don't live on the wrong side of the tracks just own a house there. Save about $2000 a year in taxes.

Unfortunately, this will start becoming the norm. I guess we can thank the internet for being part of the issue. Our PO is already 20 miles away. They cover a very large area which includes a bunch of small towns. So far they're still delivering. Our little bank will handle large packages for shipping...... That helps......

Around here small DMV offices are closing their doors. Closest one will be 50 miles away....

Be careful to stay non-political, gents.

USPS is slowly being put out of business by the internet. It will be dead in 5 years. Next is long distance phone service.

Heavy tax on internet time and $.50 Email looms in the distance. RFD will be R$D.

Whitt has the same problem as Bubba1235, just lagging a bit behind because the nearest PO would be 30 miles away.

You'd think that the Internet would HELP while e-mail hurts. Internet purchases are frequently sent by USPS, though UPS and FEDEX do get a big chunk. I think the USPS should cut BACK, not shut down, ie; 3 day a week service vs 6 or something on that line.

Its is sad of what is happening no doubt. It seems to me the Post Office should have any rights to anything with mail in its name. Email should be controlled by the PO as in any physical letter. Privacy is the key thing. With a letter, it has protection as where email is open to be hacked and viewed. Our local was closed about a year ago, however the main one is one mile further...

Service has gone to poo. Grew up in a town that had a PO that is in the old bank building (bank went out in 1930) until that was in the store accross the street. The post master made $40,000 in 1979 and is more now. The retirement of the post office is a dream in industry as better than many will see. Work rules have added cost, yes they say they have cut cost but some things they cut are not what needs cut. We al support the post office through tax dollars, even though they say they don't get them they do, if they come in short at the end ofthe year the Goverment makes up the diff. As far as email why should I pay for email that they don't touch in any way. I pay my bills throug the mail wife pays on internet, if charging a fee what about text, could be concidered mail. They refuse to do to have a good buisness picture. Contract with the local store in small towns for PO services, but the union won't allow it. Yes you can buy stamps at many local stores, banks, ect. but why does the McComb, Ohio have 4 employees for 300 po boxes, rest is done by rural carriers. Have any of you noticed the amount of junk mail has fallen off this was bread and butter for the postal service most people threw away but was profit spam has replaced this so that could be concidered. Would I write all the letters to my family without e-mail? No because I can send one to everyone with only typing one, hit send once and done. If had to write letters would not happen so no money lost. The PO is top end heavy, and worer heavy both needs to be cut.

Trying to be non-political, the problem is that the USPS can not run itself without approval for every little thing by 535 people. I haven't heard if those 535 people have approved the closing of POs YET.

These are the hours for my local post office. I say close it. Any other business with too many locations fails.

As for converting Bubba to a PO box, that's some real crap there.

Re: Rant on - No more post office

The issue is the same up here in Canada with vastly decreased usage of the 'ol postal service. The biggest challenge is trying to convince the postal workers union of their increasing redundancy and the downsizing that results....which they of course go....well 'postal' over.:D:D
I think there should be a postal service but it doesn't make any sense to try to maintain it as it was and it should be completely rebuilt, resized and remodelled to suit the new world/internet environment.:)
All good

That sure does suck bubba. Good luck with that. I tell you one thing, I would not be effected at all. Everything done through emails and the net now for years. If need to ship something there are other options. If there is something some one needs to get to me then they text me. Only thing I get in the mail is junk now anyway.

One other thing that I just don't understand - Why do post offices always have FedEx and/or UPS boxes out front? I seems to say don't use USPS, use the competition, please.

I assume they're making a buck from it. I know that several internet orders I've placed recently were shipped via UPS to my post office then delivered by the mail carrier. I think they have a similar deal with FedEx.

Re: Rant on - No more post office

Up here in the frozen north,I had to get a local PO Box while I was on the rigs. It cost me $110,and soon I started to get phone calls from the bank and credit cards wanting me to confirm my address as my mail was being returned as undeliverable. I took a trip to the PO only to find they had stuffed my box full of junk mail and they were sending my real mail back! Junk mail is the only way the PO can make any money. I couldn't beleive the stupidity they showed when I tried to correct the situation. They actually wanted me to pay more for them to stop the junk mail! I went "postal" on these people in front of about 20 customers. I did not hold back on my language or the volume of my voice as I expressed my feelings on the situation. It worked. Not one peice of junk mail came after that.
