I just purchased a 1998 Ranger R71 and had electric brakes installed on my tow vecheal and I noticed when I hooded the boat up the first time today the light does not turn green and I connected the boat to another truck and the same thing so it is the boat.

My question is do ranger trail trailers have electric brakes or just surge brakes or both so I know to persue this further. The previous owner said it had electric and it does have a 5 blade flat plug and the 7 plug round.

Help

Re: ranger boat owners

Look at the coupler. If it has a master cylinder up there it has surge brakes. Small diameter hydraulic lines would also be routed to each wheel. If it has electric brakes, check the back side of each wheel. You would see wires going into the backing plate. Five pins in the wire harness means the fifth wire may be for a reverse solenoid on a surge brake system or the electric brake feed for electrics. You need to determine what you have.

I used to have elect brakes with the lights and all on the controller in the cab. I found that every time I pulled a trailer I had to set up the sensitivity for that load; course the loads were usually different. A boat may be pretty constant once you set it up.

Have you setup your sensitivity?
